You can’t please everyone all of the time, but the MTV Scream show has certainly pleased a lot of people a lot of the time, particularly in its loving homage to horror history. Take, for example, a relatively small detail in the second season that you may not have noticed: every episode is named after a beloved horror movie.
Episode titles may be pored over in certain fandoms — looking at you, — but other shows do not always load their titles with so much meaning. Check out the episode titles for MTV Scream Season 2, and you’ll see that not only are they nods to horror classics, but they also make sense within the episode itself.
Director: Jim Gillespie
Scream link: Audrey tries to recover from her ordeal in Scream Season 1, but somebody won’t let her secrets from last term rest.
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Scream link: Not only is there a total Psycho running around killing people, the action takes us to a creepy motel Mrs Bates would be proud of.
Director: Nimród Antal
Scream link: Vacancy concerns violence being filmed in a seedy motel — exactly what occurs in this episode.
4. Happy Birthday To Me
Director: J. Lee Thompson
Scream link: Duh, it’s Kieran’s birthday!
5. Dawn of the Dead
Director: George A. Romero
Scream link: The dead are really starting to pile up right now… There’s also the theme of being shut up in a public building while danger abounds.
6. Jeepers Creepers
Scream link: The killer takes a part of the victim, just as The Creeper does.
7. Let The Right One In
Director: Tomas Alfredson
Scream link: This episode is more a case of ‘trust the right one to let you in’, but the idea of false identities and distrust hold true.
8. Village of the Damned
Director: Wolf Rilla
Scream link: Ain’t no place more damned than Lakewood… And something is certainly up with the kids in this town!
9. The Orphanage
Director: Juan Antonio Bayona
Scream link: The killings in Lakewood left many orphans, but it’s more the dark, gritty atmosphere of the movie (and a masked nefarious presence) that connects this episode to its namesake.
***The following episodes have not yet aired so the Scream link is just a guess from this point onwards!***
10. The Vanishing
Director: George Sluizer
Scream link: Someone goes missing in mysterious circumstances.
11. Heavenly Creatures
Director: Peter Jackson
Scream link: With Audrey’s preferences, the title perhaps alludes to some kind of Sapphic romance.
12. When a Stranger Calls
Director: Fred Walton
Scream link: The unknown killer appears to a stranger, but something tells me that their identity will be revealed when they finally call…
