Young ex-Hemlock Grove star Bill Skarsgard is set to play Pennywise, and while we’d been treated to , the full effect of his costume remained a mystery… until now!
Mad Men costumier Janie Bryant designed the 2017 It Pennywise’s clothing, and the costume is a rich blend of historical influences: perfect for an aeon-spanning being like It. Oh, and if you look closely, you’ll see that he’s not actually standing on the ground so much as… FLOATING.
Janie Bryant elaborated on the many subtle references hidden within the costume, revealing the deep thought process behind the movie magic:
“The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will. He is definitely a clown from a different time.
If you look at the sleeves, there are the two puffs off the shoulder and biceps and again on the bloomers, I wanted it to have an organic, gourd or pumpkin kind of effect.
It helps exaggerate certain parts of the body. The costume is very nipped in the waist and with the peplum and bloomers it has an expansive silhouette.”
Fans of will not that the 2017 It movie Pennywise is almost totally colorless when compared to the 1990 clown, but there are still sone important colorful touches, Bryant explains:
“The pompoms are orange, and then with the trim around the cuffs and the ankles, it’s basically a ball fringe that’s a combination of orange, red, and cinnamon. It’s almost like Pennywise fades into his environment. But there are accents to pull out the definition of the gray silk. It makes him almost like a shadow.”
