New Video Explains Dr. Okun’s Survival in ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’

The viral video campaign for Independence Day: Resurgence continues — you may have already seen (Goldblum’s character in first the original Independence Day film and now the sequel) and the actor Jeff Goldblum are not the same person. In this new mini-documentary, fans are shown the acclaim hippie-dippie Dr. Brakish Okun (yep, that’s his actual name) is given after the events of the first film.

In the video he’s compared to Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, and Albert Einstein with a mini bio of his scientific career, including his Top Secret work in Area 51. The most revealing piece of information is finally an explanation as to how Dr. Okun, played by Brent Spiner, is even alive to have an appearance in the sequel. In the first film, Dr. Okun is used by one of the aliens under examination to explain to President Whitmore just how not interested in peace the aliens are. After they’ve used his vocal box, he’s essentially dropped to the ground and it was an easy assumption that he didn’t survive the encounter.

You ok in there Dr. Okun?

But here’s a classic example in the movies that if you don’t call time of death, a character is fair game to . According to the above video, Dr. Okun has just been in a coma. And according to the trailers for the film, he’ll be waking up just in time with all his alien insight. Who knows, maybe that coma kept him in a psychic connection with them all this time and he’s got extra intel on how they operate?

We’ll just have to find out when Independence Day: Resurgence releases this Friday, June 24.

Have the film’s viral videos made you more excited for this week’s huge release?
