Our First Glimpse Of Dan Stevens As Mutant Legion

With X-Men: Apocalypse only out a few days in US theaters, there are now even more mutants to get excited about. Today Marvel and FX the first image of Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens as mutant David Haller in its upcoming 2017 series Legion.

In the X-Men comic series David Haller is the schizophrenic son of Charles Xavier — Professor X himself — and was hospitalized from a young age because of the voices in his head. The official description of the new show is as follows:

Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

This first image shows Stevens looking rather in-patienty, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this is early in the show, before Haller discovers that the voices in his head can actually be controlled. In fact, the character Legion is renowned as one of the strongest mutants in the X-Men universe, his many personalities controlling the varying powers he can tap into.

No sign yet of fellow Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza or Jean Smart. And while we can’t cipher too much information from this first image, rest assured the series is in good hands courtesy of showrunner Noah Hawley. He’s how creative he intends to get with the series, tapping into what is essentially a parallel universe to the one we know so well from the established X-Men films.

Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Networks had this to say about Hawley:

“We’ve come to expect excellence from Noah Hawley and with ‘Legion’ he has delivered another major creative achievement.”

While this first image certainly doesn’t reflect the Legion character of the comics — that gravity-defying hair! — it’s enough of a teaser to keep excitement up for Legion’s premiere come 2017.

Does this sneak peek into the series have you excited for Legion?
