‘Our War Has Just Begun’: Everything We Know About ‘World War Z 2’

The first World War Z movie made over half a BILLION dollars, guaranteeing a despite complaints from fans that the PG-13 rating ironed out most of the visceral realism of Max Brooks’s original World War Z novel. World War Z felt like more of a reinterpretation of the novel rather than a direct adaptation, and the grand, global scale of the project was impressively realized. Here’s a reminder of the style of the first movie, which may be replicated in World War Z 2.

Release Date

World War Z 2 is due for release June 9, 2017, putting it smack bang in the midst of the Summer blockbuster season. The June 2017 release means that World War Z 2 will be come out almost exactly four years after the original World War Z movie: will fans be extra-stoked after so much time or will public enthusiasm have lost steam?


is set to return in the lead role of Gerry Lane, who he played in the original World War Z. Back in 2013 Pitt was already enthusing about the , telling TIFF:

”We have so many ideas and so much information, we think we have a lot of stuff to mine from. We’re going to do our best and see what we get out of it.”

The only other confirmed actor for World War Z 2 is Cristian Lazar, who has been cast as an unnamed French soldier. Writer Steven Knight drafted the World War Z 2 script with Dennis Kelly coming in for the rewrite. IMDb states that Juan Antonio Bayona has left the project.


As The Oatmeal humorously points out, there are many plot points from the Max Brooks’s World War Z novel that were not touched on in the first World War Z movie. World War Z 2 could follow on directly from the ending of World War Z, but writer Steven Knight hinted that the sequel may take a different starting point entirely:

”I thought, ‘why not? What fun.’ It’s not quite like the other, we’re starting with clean slate. When they’ve signed off we’re on.”

World War Z 2 could set a great deal of its action in India, one of the most cramped and devastated areas affected by the outbreak in the novel, and hardly mentioned in the first World War Z movie. The World War Z movies are set to form a trilogy, with Paramount saying:

”View ‘World War Z’ as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead'”.
