At the end of the first Pacific Rim movie, the inter-dimensional breach was finally sealed, ensuring that humanity was safe from the threat of the alien Kaiju, but apparently, the apocalypse needs canceling again, as a sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s hit film is currently in production.
For a while though, it seemed like Pacific Rim 2 a.k.a. Pacific Rim: Maelstrom . Mixed reviews and low domestic earnings for the first film spelt trouble. Fortunately, the film was a huge hit overseas, grossing $112 million alone in China and eventually, Pacific Rim earned $407 million worldwide, easily recouping its $190 million budget to become the most successful live-action original movie of 2013.
Inevitably, a sequel was eventually lit, ensuring that everyone’s favorite Jaeger pilots will return once again to fight giant monsters in their giant robot suits. Yes, Pacific Rim is all kinds of ridiculous and yes, we are beyond excited to see what the sequel has in store, so join us as we break down everything we know so far about the monster mecha mash-up to end all monster mecha mash-ups.
What Will The Story Be?
Predictably, the cast and crew of Pacific Rim 2 are rather secretive about the plot specifics, but what we do know is that the sequel will be set a couple of years after the original. It’s likely that the film will open on a positive note, depicting a world where Jaeger pilots no longer need to protect the world from , but we all know that won’t last for long.
Reports suggest that Dr. Newton “Newt” Geiszler and Dr. Herman Gottlieb will play an important role in the sequel, leading some fans to believe that Newt’s experiences inside the minds of the Kaiju may have disturbed him psychologically, potentially turning him to the dark side.
We’ve also been told that the origins of the monsters will be explored in more detail so it seems likely that Newt’s connection with the Kaiju will kick start the inevitable conflict, forcing the surviving Jaeger pilots to return from retirement once more.
Who Will Write Pacific Rim 2?
Pacific Rim is Del Toro’s pet project, so he will remain the creative force behind the upcoming sequel, but the producer’s initial draft has since been worked on by co-writer Derek Connolly, whose upcoming credits include Jurassic World 2 and Kong: Skull Island.
As if terrifying dinosaurs and giant gorillas weren’t monstrous enough, Connolly can now add anime-inspired aliens from another dimension to his monstrous portfolio. Connolly’s work on the first Jurassic World script divided critics, but , so Pacific Rim 2 seems to be in pretty safe hands.
Who Will Direct Pacific Rim 2?
Del Toro’s hard at work on a number of projects right now, which unfortunately means he’s unable to return to the directors chair for Pacific Rim 2, but the franchise is still clearly a labor of love for him as Del Toro will remain onboard in an executive producer role.
Genre fans will be happy to learn that Daredevil Season 1 showrunner . Daredevil was a phenomenal success for both Marvel and Netflix alike, featuring some of the best action sequences ever seen on TV, and although DeKnight hasn’t helmed a feature film yet, Pacific Rim 2 looks like it could be the perfect place to start.
Who Is The Star?
Charlie Hunnam took a break from causing anarchy on the small screen to star in the original Pacific Rim, but the news that fresh off his stint in Star Wars: The Force Awakens suggests that Pacific Rim 2 has found itself a new lead character.
Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s character who memorably delivered this kickass speech from the original.
Boyega won’t have much time to mourn his fictional father’s passing though, as the up and coming actor will also co-produce the film alongside Femi Oguns, Legendary’s Thomas Tull, del Toro, Mary Parent and Jon Jashni.
Boyega’s busy schedule means that it’s becoming less and less likely that , but we still share Del Toro’s on the casting choice;
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The ‘Pacific Rim’ universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Will The Rest Of The Cast Return?
Although Boyega has taken the lead role in Pacific Rim 2, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket or Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori. Both of these Jaeger pilots played an instrumental part in the first film, so it would be foolish of the sequel to overlook them, despite the two year time jump.
Del Toro confirmed that Pacific Rim 2 will feature a number of returning characters, :
“No, no, no, Charlie Day has a great part but so does Charlie Hunnam. I think that everybody or most everybody that survived is back. The rest we killed. We killed half the cast.”
Plot points are unclear at this time, but Kikuchi’s breakout role in the original was one of the film’s highlights, so we hope she’ll be given
When Will Pacific Rim 2 Be Released?
This is the big question here, folks. Pacific Rim 2 has had a more troubled production than most, remaining in development hell since 2014. The film was originally scheduled for release in August 2017, but Warner Bros. pushed Pitch Perfect 3 to this slot instead. Great news for fans of acapella pop, but not so good if you enjoy watching anime-inspired monsters wrestle giant robots.
