Rumors have dropped today about the Ben Affleck co-written and directed Batman movie. The movie, which is rumored to be titled The Batman, . No one knows just when exactly this movie will come out, but safe bet says that it will be no earlier than 2018 and no later than 2019. Information about the movie has been scarce, as Affleck himself even said that he is still working on the script. But the rumor mill has started and with San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, it seems ripe for this to drop: Batman is going to Arkham Asylum.
Arkham Asylum is . Even if they are not mentally unstable, there have been exceptions for the super-powered villains, as Arkham is the only place in Gotham that can house them. It has been reported for some time that this Batman movie would feature multiple villains from Batman’s gallery of rogues. The movie being set in this environment would be a natural way to get these villains involved without it seeming forced.
There is precedent here, with the 2009 release of the critically and commercially successful Batman: Arkham Asylum. The game forced Batman into Arkham Asylum as he was forced to deal with the chaotic events transpiring. There was a primary villain in the game, but along the way he had to deal with other villains who were in on the main plot or just in his way. This enabled Batman to deal with a different variety of enemies and forced things to never get stale. This should be the template that the rumored movie should follow.
The Asylum Could Introduce Multiple Villains
The movie should have a main villain that Batman encounters infrequently, always trying to keep up and figure out what exactly is going on. The main villain should also force Batman to as a way of stalling. This way audiences get the best of both worlds. They get a chance to see Batman villains who probably cannot carry their own movie and keep things fresh while the main villain gets to play puppet master and show why they can be the Big Bad of a movie.
The Asylum Is More Intimate
Arkham Asylum itself can also be something unique to a superhero movie in the modern age. Arkham Asylum changes in every medium — sometimes it’s a simple mental hospital, while other times it is a bit more intricate and vast. Either way, it would keep Batman boxed in. This would be a refreshing take to the Batman movies, as he usually has to deal with some sort of citywide catastrophe. If he has to be in a more intimate setting, we can see many more sides of Batman.
We Could Explore Batman’s Psyche
Being set in the mental hospital, also gives a chance to delve into this Batman’s psyche. When we meet him in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice he is clearly unhinged and in the Ultimate Edition of this movie, it is outright stated that something has made him snap. We know that this Batman has been active for about 20 years — what has that done to his psyche? How do people in Arkham feel about him? Do they think he belongs in their with the villains he captures? Does he himself feel like he belongs there?
The possibilities are endless for this movie if set in Arkham Asylum. It would definitely be an interesting Batman movie, unlike any we have seen before. As has been said many times, this is all rumors at this point, but it is only a matter of time before there is a Batman movie set within the infamous walls of Arkham Aslyum. Time will only tell if we will get this sooner or later.
