In the decade of re-boots, it seems that another ’80s classic is gearing up to get a re-vamp. Director Shane Black recently revealed that he is working on The Predator — the original Predator was directed by John McTiernan and famously starred action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Alan ‘Dutch’ Schaefer, the leader of an elite special forces team on a mission to rescue hostages from guerrilla territory. Relive the impact that the movie had at the end of the ’80s with the trailer below:
Indeed, back when it first came out, the science fiction horror flick sent ripples through box offices all around the world, and it appears Shane Black is hoping to revive that monster once more.
As grows, the director has been offering further snippets of information to get our tongues wagging over the currently dormant franchise. In a recent interview with Empire, he gave some insights into the new film with a particular focus on its darker tone:
“The worst thing you could hope for in one of these is a shot in bright sunlight of a field and the Predator just kind of walks on and ‘hello’ – you want to do… I keep going back to Ridley Scott, the way he captured the alien in that first movie. The sense of mystery and portent. If we could just cut into a little piece of that – that sort of vibe – and then I think there’s humor to be had too. And tonal shifting.”
Black also addressed the question of , saying:
“Well it seems to me if we set ours in 2018 which is when the film [Predator 2] is set, then we can only be a prequel to that one, so you could say yes it exists, but people won’t be discussing it really…it’s in the midst of the mythology. It’s a movie that’s set in our present-day. Or maybe the day after tomorrow.”
Previously, the director also teased fans with possibilities that Arnold Schwarzenegger might be making a bold return to the series, although nothing has been officially announced. As for whether Dwayne Johnson, with whom Black is is going to be a part of The Predator, he had this to say:
“Um, well look, I’m meeting with him in a couple of weeks…anything can happen in this crazy genre world.”
Sounds promising! I’d certainly love to see The Rock and Arnie go head-to-head in a colossal extraterrestrial bust-up.
As it stands though, we do have our leading man (yet apparently this could change!) During the Empire interview, Black was quoted as saying the following:
“The hero of the film, the name I’ve given the guy, is Quinn McKenna. Quinn McKenna. Rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?”
And while we consider that, the director also reiterated that he wanted to give life back to the franchise, making the movie feel like an ‘event’ again:
“It’s an attempt to ‘event-ise’ the Predator again. An attempt to make it more mysterious. The Predator has been so overdone. Every couple of years, there’s a knock-off churned out. Very low budget with a guaranteed return. (We want to achieve) the same sense of wonderment and newness that ‘Close Encounters’ had when that came out. That’s what we want. It’s very impossible. But we’re gonna try. It doesn’t have to be 50 Predators riding motorcycles. It just has to feel like a powerful story that has a lot of flavours and textures.”
The Predator is set to hit box offices in March 2018.
