Star Wars Characters That DON’T Need Their Own Anthology Films

The Star Wars universe is humongous as there are 7 movies, which take place over the course of multiple generations. There are even more movies in the works that are expanding the universe by either continuing the storyline or filling in some holes. For example, the next Star Wars film in the works is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The movie is telling the story of the rebels who steal the Death Star plans from the Imperials. This story was only mentioned but now, we get a whole movie about it. The next anthology film is one that tells the story of Han Solo and how he became the smuggler who hangs out with a Wookie and ends up in Mos Eisely Cantina back in Episode 4. Sure, these anthology movies are awesome and it’s never a bad thing to get more Star Wars movies. However, there are certain characters in the Star Wars universe that fans want to have their own anthology movie. These certain characters should not get their own movies because it is either unnecessary to show more of their backgrounds or that showing their origins will ruin the concept of these certain characters.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

It has been heavily rumored that the third anthology film will revolve around Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan is one of my favorite characters in the Star Wars saga. However, there is no need for his own anthology movie as his storyline has been fully threshed out and we have seen enough of him for the most part. We saw him as a Jedi apprentice to him becoming Anakin Skywalker’s master to becoming an old man and becoming Luke Skywalker’s master only to be slain by his old apprentice Anakin Skywalker turned Darth Vader. We have seen Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episodes 1 and 2, be a main character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars for 6 seasons (also the first Clone Wars cartoon back in 2003), Episode 3, Episode 4, and as a force ghost in Episodes 5 and 6. Now fans think he should get his own movie?!

We have already seen everything there is to know about Obi-Wan. We have learned all of his motives and seen all of his important arcs. There are many more important characters and events that deserve light to be shined on them than Obi-Wan. The rumored anthology film is rumored to take place during two different time periods: when he is exiled on Tatooine between Episodes 3 and 4 or when he was a padawan before Episode 1. We do not need to see him exiled on Tatooine because all he did was hide. We don’t need a whole movie or even a comic book series/novel focusing on Ben Kenobi’s time chilling out on Tatooine and slaying tusken raiders. Also, what is there to show with Obi-Wan Kenobi before he was a padawan? Even though he is a powerful Jedi, there was nothing extra special about him like there was with Anakin Skywalker. There is no purpose to having an anthology film starring 12-year old Obi-Wan Kenobi. The whole purpose of these anthology films is to expand the universe. Showing Obi-Wan’s time as a padawan or hiding on Tatooine does not expand the universe at all.

Now, I’m not saying I never want to see Obi-Wan Kenobi again. It would be awesome to see him appear in Star Wars: Rebels in the future. Also, if I could see him again, I would want to see him as a force ghost in Episode 8 (along with Anakin and Yoda). Lastly, he could always appear in another storyline for some other character, event, or concept. Obi-Wan being the center of a movie, comic book series, novel, or anything else is just unneeded and pointless.

Boba Fett

It is safe to name Boba Fett the most bad-ass figure in the Star Wars universe. But why? It is because he is a mysterious figure that we don’t know much about. He’s only had a few lines in the whole classic trilogy. Shine a light on him and the love fades away; the mystery is what makes him the beloved character he is today. Many fans are praying that a Boba Fett movie goes into development but they have no idea that his solo movie is the opposite of what they want. The prequel trilogy didn’t do everything right but one of the things they did well was explain where Boba Fett came from without revealing too much.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see Boba Fett in some movies. It would be a missed opportunity to not include him in the upcoming Han Solo anthology film. Boba Fett could be one of the main antagonists as he would be hired by Jabba the Hutt to hunt Han Solo down. That potentially could be an awesome adventure flick and it’s also very possible. However, Boba Fett should not have a whole movie revolved around him. The origin of his conflict with Han Solo should definitely be shown. However, a story with him in the front is not the way to go. He is a total bad-ass when he is a side character. He is not the type of character who could lead his own movie and attempting to do so could either end in disaster or tarnish the character.

Darth Maul

Darth Maul is a character whose story was cut short (no pun intended). He was introduced as Palpatine’s apprentice in The Phantom Menace and instantly caught fan’s attention as they anxiously waited for the release of the film back in 1999. Fans were disappointed when Darth Maul was cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of the film. It is agreed that Attack of the Clones should have brought back Darth Maul and it would have made the movie less cringe-worthy. It would have elevated both Darth Maul and Obi-Wan’s character (perhaps it would have taken away the urge for fans to want them to have their own solo movies). While Obi-Wan hunts down Jango Fett, Darth Maul would hunt down Obi-Wan and it would be a huge twist. They would finally have their final duel in Episode 3 instead of General Grievous, who had no conflict with Kenobi. That would have been nice, wouldn’t it? However, what happened cannot be changed.

Fans desperately await for a Darth Maul anthology movie because he was purely a wasted opportunity. He was brought back to life in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and had a big arc there. He is now currently a character in Star Wars: Rebels. Where the show brings the character is currently unknown, but no matter where Darth Maul ends up post-Star Wars: Rebels (if he survives), his own solo movie will not be necessary. He is not a character who could hold up a solo movie by himself. Let’s not forget that his character has been all over the place.

What would his solo movie be about? We already saw how he survives and then him trying to hunt down Kenobi. We don’t know where he will be or what he’ll be doing after Star Wars: Rebels, but he is a very old man. Darth Maul had his chance to be a great character but The Phantom Menace committed a crime, among many others, and “killed” him off. However, his storyline could possibly continue into the sequel trilogy. .

There are many characters in the Star Wars universe that don’t deserve their own solo film. I took 3 of the heavily anticipated ideas for a solo movie and explained why they shouldn’t get an anthology film. These ideas don’t expand the universe, which defeats the purpose of what the anthology films are trying to accomplish. Also, we have to remember that a lot of the beloved characters fans want to lead their own solo movie are not capable for leading their own movie. Attempting to do so would either ruin the character by changing them and/or the movie could end up being a disaster. Therefore, let’s stick to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. Whatever the third film may be, Disney and LucasFilm know that they will be able to make it into an awesome movie.

What do YOU guys think? Do all YOU guys agree with me? (I doubt it) If not, tell me why (nicely) in the comments below!
