DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow is setting itself up for a big season with the inclusion of the Justice Society of America and , not to mention that the show will be partaking in this year’s Arrow-verse crossover. and now it has also been confirmed that Power Ranger‘s actress Sarah Grey has been cast in the role of JSA member Stargirl.
Stargirl is known as a member of the Justice Society of America and for her relationships with some of the key members. If you don’t know who she is, then fear not my fellow Arrow-verse friends, allow me to give you a quick recap on everything you need to know about Stargirl a.k.a. Courtney Whitmore.
Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E
Before she became Stargirl, Courtney Whitmore found the Star-Spangled Kid’s attire in Pat Dugan’s belongings. Pat Dugan was her stepfather and a former sidekick of the Star-Spangled Kid. Annoyed at Dugan for marrying her mother and for illegally making them move from their home, Whitmore wore the outfit to annoy him. However, Dugan built a robot suit and donned the identity of S.T.R.I.P.E and together the duo fought crime.
Stargirl’s Origin And The Justice Society Of America
After Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E, Whitmore moved on. Having previously met Whitmore, Jack Knight a.k.a Starman knew who we would pass on the mantle of Starman to once he retired. Whitmore was then given Knight’s cosmic staff and she adopted the identity of Stargirl. Afterwards, she joined the Justice Society of America.
She Had A Relationship With Shazam
One of the more known aspects about the character is her brief relationship with Shazam a.k.a Billy Batson. While in the guise of Shazam, his relationship with Whitmore was frowned upon — as Batson was a 14 year old kid he could legally date her, but when appearing as an older Shazam, the relationship was disliked by their fellow JSA members who were not aware of his secret identity. When confronted by these team members, Shazam opted to leave the JSA — and Whitmore — instead of being honest about his age.
She’s Been Romantically Linked With Atom Smasher
There are hints that Whitmore was involved with Albert Rothstein — Atom Smasher — but their romance never really went anywhere. However, at one point in the comics, there is a glimpse into the future which reveals an older Whitmore, now known as Starwoman, married to him.
This is interesting because as Legends of Tomorrow deals with time travel, it is possible that this concept will be explored in the show. Furthermore, an Earth-2 version of Rothstein appeared in the Season 2 premiere of The Flash and killed his Earth-1 counterpart. Whether or not this will have any impact on her appearance in Legends of Tomorrow has yet to be revealed.
Stargirl Appeared On Smallville
Although Stargirl has appeared in several animated series, the character is perhaps best known for her appearance in Smallville. Actress Britt Irvin played her in several episodes of the ninth and tenth seasons.
The most notable thing about her appearance in the show is the two-hour TV movie “Absolute Justice” — this feature length episode also included several other members from the Justice Society of America. Her appearance on Smallville marked Stargirl’s first ever live-action appearance and she has not been portrayed on screen again since — until now.
With so many new arrivals, Legends of Tomorrow is becoming one of the most highly anticipated shows on television. The introduction of the Justice Society of America and the Legion of Doom will allow the show to not only introduce fan favorite characters, but also explore uncharted territory. Whether or not any of these characters will be featured in the Arrow-verse crossover has yet to be seen, but the arrival of these new characters could change the Arrow-verse forever.
