Spoiler Alert: Beware, as you will find many spoilers for all the seasons of The Vampire Diaries. You have been warned.
The Vampire Diaries has spent most of the show’s seasons focusing on Elena Gilbert ( ), which is why Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) remained in her shadow. Knowing Bonnie, however, she was probably just lurking in said shadow to keep her vampire friends company while sheltered from the sun.
This Bennett witch has blossomed into one of the most loveable characters on The CW series, proving how underrated she’s been all along. We’re devastated to hear that upcoming .
In honor of her time as Bonnie thus far, here’s everything you need to know about the best BFF a person could wish for:
1. She’s The Most Awesome Witch In EVERY Way
Bonnie Sheila Bennett has an entire thesaurus worth of qualities, which we obviously can’t all list, but we can certainly try… Here it goes, Bonnie is: important, loyal, kind, brave, compassionate, determined, patient, powerful, selfless, intelligent, sassy, beautiful, and not to mention, a total bad a$$. Jealous, yet?
Bonnie Bennett has probably gone through the most drastic changes on The Vampire Diaries. She has not only survived each and every predicament that’s been thrown her way, but she has continued to thrive throughout.
She has always put others first at her own expense, fulfilling a role as confidante and friend. She is constantly the first to volunteer herself as the sacrificial solution, regardless of the consequences.
2. She’s A Descendant Of The Salem Witches
Bonnie didn’t originally believe her Grams’s (Jasmine Guy) witch stories, so she just disregarded her odd premonitions as her being a psychic. However, the manifestation of her magic powers certainly exposed the family’s heritage in witchcraft to be legit.
The Bennett bloodline is a notoriously powerful descendance, which migrated to the US by way of Salem, Massachusetts (most likely during the infamous Salem Witch Trials in the late 1600s). As Stefan once said: “Salem witches are heroic examples of individualism and non-conformity.”
This link to her lineage is crucial throughout The Vampire Diaries as she is the only one able to access or destroy spells created by Bennett witches. Turns out, there have been quite a few. Bonnie eventually becomes the sole remaining survivor of the Bennett family.
3. She Gained The Power Of Expression
The power of Expression is a form of Dark Magic which draws upon energy from the dead. It is an extremely powerful sorcery considered so malicious it would be detrimental to the world if ever called into existence. In fact, most witches refuse to refer to it as “magic” as it expands beyond the limitations of both ancient and modern witchcraft.
Despite having previously lost her powers, practicing expression made Bonnie Bennett one of the most powerful witches in existence. This led to her defeat of the world’s first immortal being, Silas. Even the strongest vampires of all, the Originals, did not want to mess with Bonnie.
(2013) is now its own CW TV series, which was created as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries.
Even though her Grams had warned her not to mess with such power, Bonnie was desperate to revive her boyfriend Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen), who also happened to be her best friend Elena’s younger brother.
Bonnie attempted to channel her new-found abilities, combined with the power of the spirits and other dark magic. She managed to bring her lover back from the dead, but it came at a price…
4. She Was Dead, Stuck On “The Other Side”
This Other Side made Adele’s Hello sound like a stroll in the park on a sunny day. After lowering the veil that separated the deceased from the living, Bonnie managed to revive Jeremy.
Unfortunately, the spell was too strong for her and came at the cost of her own life. This means she was trapped on the other side, along with every other dead supernatural creature.
Luckily for her, Jeremy could now see dead people so he could communicate with Bonnie. Still, as they couldn’t touch and she was dead and all, it was a bit of a mood killer. They never stopped looking for a solution until they finally thought of something…
4. She Became The Anchor Between The Living And The Dead
Elena’s doppelgänger Amara had been turned into the Anchor thousands of years ago. This meant that every supernatural being went through Amara once they died in order to get to the purgatory on the Other Side. As if life didn’t suck enough being dead, Bonnie was to experience a whole new kind of pain.
Qetsiyah (Janina Gavankar), Bonnie’s ancient and extremely powerful ancestor, transferred her Anchor curse from Amara onto Bonnie. This was the only means to bring our favorite witch back to life. This not only caused Bonnie excruciating torment, but it also discarded all of her recently-acquired powers.
The Other Side started imploding for multiple reasons, which directly threatened Bonnie’s life. In the process, she and Damon Salvatore became as good as dead. The two got stuck in a custom-made prison designed for Kai Parker (Chris Wood), a psychopathic murderer who was part of the Gemini covent.
In this prison, they were forced to repeat the same day over and over again: May 10, 1994. Four months later, Damon’s escape managed to revive Bonnie’s magic and revealed itself as the key to getting out.
After months of trial and error, a combination of Kai’s torment and sheer loneliness drove Bonnie suicidal until on day 278. This involved Bon-Bon essentially trading her magic with Qetsiyah’s, thus making her more powerful.
5. Bonnie’s Life Is Linked To Elena’s
Bonnie’s return to real life came with some changes: some PTSD (obvs) and finally putting herself first on occasion. She even ended things with Jeremy as she needed to spend time focusing on herself. Bennett eventually adjusted, but imprisoned Kai in a 1903 prison world as her own form of revenge for all his tormenting.
Kai freed himself with the help of the Travellers, a group of old witch-vampires that included the Salvatore brothers’ mother, Lily. Consumed by her own vengeance for Damon, Lily Salvatore (Annie Wersching) suggested Kai link Bonnie’s life to Elena’s by using a powerful curse.
Elena will remain comatose until Bonnie dies, meaning they’ll never see each other again. In the meantime, Damon took Elena’s place as her new BFF (along with Caroline Forbes, of course).
6. Bonnie Was Basically A Prisoner In Enzo’s Cabin
Lorenzo St. John (Michael Malarkey) was working as a double agent for the Armory, an organization that specializes in the supernatural. Enzo saved Bonnie’s life once he found out the Armory wanted her. No one knew why, but they knew it could not have been a good reason.
Enzo kept Bonnie in his cabin in the woods for three years while feeding her magic-suppressing pills so no one could track her powers. Bonnie took a little time off from her refuge to go undercover in a psych ward. Her rationale was to get close to a relative of the Armory’s leader in order to discover their intentions.
Little did Lorenzo know, the pills he distributed also worked as a slow poison with no cure. This was particularly devastating as Enzo and Bonnie had fallen in love during their time together. Enzo couldn’t bear the thought of his girlfriend dying so he went to drastic measures to keep her alive.
6. Bonnie Bennett Became A Vampire Huntress
In order to save Bonnie’s life, Enzo made a deal with the vampire huntress, Rayna Cruz (Leslie-Anne Huff). Rayna agreed to transfer her life to Bonnie’s in exchange for a peaceful death. The catch only revealed itself once the shift was concluded: Bonnie would take on Rayna’s lifelong mission as a shamanic vampire huntress.
Bonnie became more alike with her vampire-hunting ex Jeremy than she probably would have liked. This was particularly conflicting as all her friends are vampires, along with her new boyfriend, Enzo.
Damon destroyed the last remaining shaman corpse, which broke Bonnie’s connection to it. She lost her drive to murder vampires, along with any remaining shamanic or witch-related abilities. Her biggest loss, however, was Enzo and Damon, whose souls became possessed by the dark side due to an unknown force of evil in the vault.
7. Bonnie Will Conquer All
While we have no idea what is in store for Season 8, we do know that Bonnie will spend every waking hour relentlessly searching for ways to bring Damon and Enzo back.
We can only hope this involves with some sort of loophole in Kai’s curse. These best friends have been through enough and it is time for them to reunite.
What was your favorite Bonnie moment?
