(Warning: The following contains multiple giant, hulking SPOILERS for next year’s Justice League movie, garnered from a recent set visit. Proceed with whatever level of Bat-like caution that suggests to you is wise…)
Now, here’s the thing. Last week, I – along with several other journalists – . Which was, as it turns out, a distinctly informative experience. Among the revelations about and , though, there were hundreds of smaller reveals of varying levels of note. One of the most intriguing (and geekily grin-inducing) of those?
The Flash’s New ‘Justice League’ Costume Is Pretty Much Everything You Were Hoping For
Or, to be more specific, The Flash’s costume is, as it turns out, a distinctly fan-friendly combination of modern touches (wires flash all over his body as he runs, and the whole thing is intentionally well-worn and rough around the edges, seeing as Barry Allen can’t actually afford to buy whatever materials he needs) and classic features (the outfit is very red, and looks as though its sped its way straight from a comic-book variant cover of some kind).
What’s more, you can actually catch a fleeting glimpse of it in the background of this here Twitter post from director Zack Snyder:
Deep in it with Jason on JL
— ZackSnyder (@ZackSnyder)
Which, as it happens, completely fails to capture the shiny, practical inventiveness of the suit as worn – but that’s actually OK. Y’see, as this here Sneak Peek video from earlier this year has already shown us…
…Ezra Miller’s take on The Flash is less about expectation and iconography – he’s not Batman, after all – and more about the transformation of a once B-List character into a true cinematic fan-favorite (much as Marvel successfully did with both Captain America and Iron Man). With Miller seemingly set to spend much of Justice League‘s running time charismatically quipping while running around in a surprisingly realistic red suit, that particular target, it seems, might well be about to be met.
A big part of that possibility? Miller seems to be playing Allen with the same sort of gleeful geekiness with which Justice League‘s costume designer Michael Wilkinson has clearly infused his costume. As Wilkinson put it during a visit to his studio, “this guy’s clearly not flawless”, but he is “an incredibly smart and resourceful young man” (albeit one who may have made his suit with “stolen materials”).
A flawed, occasionally rebellious geek with a kick-ass, comic-book faithful costume and the ability to be funny all of the time? Heck, if that isn’t the mark of a soon-to-be fan-favorite, I don’t know what is. I mean, it worked for Spider-Man…
What do you reckon, though?
