After over a decade of work, Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann’s new is just weeks away from premiering, and a new trailer has just been released to get us all hyped.
, The Get Down tells the story of the last days of disco, and the rise of hip-hop. The music-driven series will follow a group of six kids living in South Bronx, and chronicle their lives as the music scene is changed forever by the advent of hip-hop, then known as “the get down.” Take a look at the trailer below:
The Get Down is the first TV series that has ever covered the early hip-hop scene, and the show will also include real archival footage of New York in the 70s, as well as both original music, and modern versions of songs of the era. Series associate producer and hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash has even praised the historical accuracy of The Get Down, saying Luhrmann got the show “extremely, extremely, extremely, extremely close,” to what the era was actually like.
The cast of the series includes Jaden Smith (The Karate Kid), Herizen F. Guardiola (Runaway Island), Shameik Moore (Dope), Justice Smith (Paper Towns), Skylan Brooks (Southpaw), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Mamoudou Athie (Jean of the Joneses) and Jimmy Smits (Sons of Anarchy).
But while you might not recognize all of the cast — many are just at the beginning of their acting career — you might be more familiar with those who worked with Luhrmann on creating the series. As mentioned before, Grandmaster Flash was an associate producer, meanwhile legendary MC, Nas was executive producer. Additionally Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Kool Herc, Kurtis Blow and Raheim of the Furious 5 all acted as consultants.
The Get Down will be available for streaming on Netflix from August 12.
