The excitement is building for next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, in which the newest iteration of the Wall-Crawler will swing into his first solo movie! No Marvel superhero has a better rogues’ gallery than Spider-Man, and that’s one of the reasons fans are particularly excited about this film. After all, along with Spider-Man himself, the MCU is gaining potentially countless new characters! So which supervillains are going to appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming?
Confirmed: The Vulture!
The main villain is Adrian Tombs, better known as the . This classic Spider-Man supervillain was introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #2, but has rarely been taken seriously. Sam Raimi planned to use the character as the main villain for the aborted , with the goal of turning the Vulture into a savage and dangerous foe. It looks as though Spider-Man: Homecoming is going to run with that idea!
The Vulture is a criminal genius who invented a flight harness. Using this, he flies with tremendous manoeuvrability and skill; and before we underestimate that particular ability, remember the tremendous way that this power has been used by Anthony Mackie’s Falcon!
Although it’s not confirmed, it seems very likely that Michael Keaton – famed for his classic portrayal of Batman – is playing the main supervillain.
Confirmed: The Tinkerer!
Michael Chernus has been as the terrible Tinkerer – an unlikely addition to the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming! The Tinkerer is a classic Marvel villain, a genius who tends to work in the background and give advanced technology to other supervillains. On occasion, he’s even held auctions for items as rare as the Venom symbiote!
It’s likely that the Tinkerer will play a sort of ‘anti-Tony-Stark’ role. Where Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark is providing technology to Spider-Man, the Tinkerer is likely giving tech to Spider-Man’s many foes.
Rumored: The Shocker!
Although it’s not confirmed, there are that Bokeem Woodbine is playing the part of the Shocker. Another classic Spider-Man supervillain, the Shocker wears gauntlets that can project devastating vibrational waves of energy. Although he’s not seen as a major threat, the fact remains that – in favorable circumstances – he’s come remarkably close to beating Spider-Man.
The original plans for Sam Raimi’s began with Spider-Man taking down a montage of C- and D-list supervillains, including the Shocker. If the Shocker does indeed appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it’s possible that the film is borrowing a lot from Raimi’s unused script.
Another Unknown Villain…
Logan Marshall-Green- most well-known for his turn as Charlie Holloway in Prometheus, and helming this year’s slow-burning horror The Invitation– is also on board for Spider-Man: Homecoming. It’s generally believed he’s playing another supervillain- but given the random announcements so far, it’s pretty much impossible to guess who he’s going to be playing!
So far, Spider-Man: Homecoming looks set to establish a whole new street-level crime-wave in the MCU. If the film does indeed borrow from Spider-Man 4 for a supervillain montage, then we can expect still more supervillains to be announced. What’s more, with the MCU gearing towards building up a ‘Spider-Man’ corner, introducing the right villains may well mean that much-discussed Sinister Six movie could be in the works.
With Spider-Man: Homecoming filming now, the announcements are sure to keep coming. Here at Movie Pilot, we’ll keep you posted on the latest news and rumors!
