I will be ranking the two actors in several categories, give an explanation of why they received the score, and then open voting up to you, the fans! At the very end, I’ll give you my overall conclusion on who I think should play James Bond, and give you the chance to either wholeheartedly agree or vehemently disagree. So let’s get down to business (to defeat the Huns…Sorry wrong movie…)
The first category we will judge our strapping James Bond potentials in is Britishness (yes, I am aware that’s not a real word). Do these men have what it takes to play the most iconic British role of all time? Jamie Bell
Looks British to me
Jamie loses some points in the British department for a few reasons. The majority of his acting career is in American films playing American characters, he’s married to American actress Evan Rachel Wood, and I couldn’t find a single picture of him doing any stereotypically British things (sorry British readers!). However, he has also won a BAFTA, played the adorable Billy Elliot in the British dance drama Billy Elliot, and he was born in Billingham, Teesside, England. So he earns high marks in this category!Tom Hiddleston
When you think of a British man, few names come before Tom. He’s a Shakespearean trained actor having played roles such as Cassio in Othello, Henry V in Henry V, and Coriolanus in Coriolanus. He was also born in London, England. He’s adored by thousands for his role in the MCU as the villainous Loki. Honestly, I can’t think of any reasons to dock him any points in this category.Winner: Tom HiddlestonCharmSome Bonds have been less charming than others. However, this is a key character trait for our favorite secret agent. In order to fulfill the role to the high standards we hold the character to, the actor has to be able to charm his way into our hearts (and the hearts of the various women Bond always tries to seduce).Jamie Bell
Perhaps Jamie was super charming in his youth, I mean have you seen Billy Elliot, but his most recent film, Fantastic 4, left a bad taste in many of our mouths (though not because of him) and he wasn’t exactly charming as the Thing/Ben Grimm. Would he be charming enough to play Bond? Absolutely! He just needs another chance to prove to us how charming he can really be.Tom Hiddleston
He’s so charming, he charmed a cat
Have you ever been so charming you played one of the evilest characters in superhero cinematic history and still had people fangirling all over you? Unless your name is Tom Hiddleston or Heath Ledger, then the answer is no. Tom managed to take the annoying little brother of Thor and turn him into every girl’s dream guy (seriously, if you’re dreaming about a maniacal mastermind hellbent on taking over the world with an alien invasion, you might need to rethink you’re dreams). Unfortunately for Bell, I don’t think this category was even close.Winner: Charming TomHandsomeness
This is a hard category for me, but don’t think just because I’m a straight man I can’t judge the handsomeness of other straight men (because I totally can, they are gorgeous). Now with all of the categories, feel free to disagree with my assessments as they are totally personal and subjective, I mean how can you objectively define somebody’s handsomeness?Jamie Bell
The glasses are a great addition!
Bell is by no means an unattractive man, quite the contrary! To be able to snag the hearts of both Evan Rachel Wood and Fantastic 4 co-star Kate Mara, you’d have to be rather good looking. The real question here is: Is he more handsome than Tom Hiddleston?Tom Hiddleston
Look into his perfect eyes!
I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t think Tom is absolutely stunning! Perhaps that’s the reason so many people fell in love with Loki? How does one decide in this situation? You have two men who are very handsome, perfect for James Bond, and you have to decide who wins this round? Well, actually, it’s my article so I make the rules!Winner: It’s a tie!Innovation to the Franchise
Our final category is a bit different; in this round we’ll be looking at who has more potential to do something fresh and interesting with the character. Who will be able to take the iconic character and change it enough to make it unique without changing the essence of who Bond is? Jamie Bell
He is looking towards the future
Jamie has been in the industry since the young age of 14, and at the still young age of 30 he has a promising future ahead of him. Bell might not have nearly as many credits to his name as Hiddleston (as Tom has done a lot of theatrical work), but perhaps that gives him an edge over his competitor? We haven’t seen a lot from Jamie, so perhaps he has even more to offer!Tom Hiddleston
Deep in thought
Hiddleston has only been a serious actor since 2001 (a full year later than Jamie Bell), but he’s also five years older and more experienced. He has a long list of live theater roles to his name and has starred alongside some huge names (such as Anthony Hopkins) in the world of movies. But, does he have the same type of potential that Jamie has? Can he take the franchise and do something totally new with it?
Winner: Jamie BellFinal Verdict
We had two very worthy contenders going at it today, but who will take home the trophy? One of these men is destined to be James Bond (unless of course, the studio decides to completely change their minds and do something different, as they are wont to do). Based on the above statistics it looks like Jamie won one round, there was a draw in round three, and Tom took home two wins. That puts the final count at 2 to 1 in Tom’s favor! I would personally love to see Tom as our next James Bond, but we will have to wait to see who actually gets the role, as I’m sure either one would do the iconic character justice. Do you agree with my choices? Who would you like to see as James Bond? Let us know in the comments below!Want to be updated on Everything Super? Follow me here and on twitter @jeremiahapaul1
