Can you believe that this week the endlessly watchable Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep film The Devil Wears Prada turns 10 years old this week?! No? Neither can I, but apparently it is, no matter how much I deny it.
To celebrate the anniversary, Hathaway, Streep and recently sat dow with Variety to spill all about their experience with the film, including one very interesting reveal from the devil herself, Meryl Streep.
Despite the fact that Miranda Priestly could certainly never have been pulled off with such pizzazz and quite so many withering stares if not played by , the star has revealed it almost happened. After years of being hesitant to negotiate her salary, the low offer for The Devil Wears Prada was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back and made her take a stand. Streep explained:
“The offer was, to my mind, slightly, if not insulting, not perhaps reflective of my actual value to the project. There was my ‘goodbye moment,’ and then they doubled the offer. I was 55, and I had just learned, at a very late date, how to deal on my own behalf.”
Way to show ’em, Meryl! This revelation is quite surprising given that Streep was not only the highlight of the film, but also due to the fact that at this point in her career Streep had . Basically, what the hell were the studio execs thinking?!
Aside from her reveal about her salary, Streep also gave away the people on whom she based her portrayal of Miranda, and no, it wasn’t Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour (even if the character in the book is widely believed to be based on her)!
“The voice I got from Clint Eastwood. He never, ever, ever raises his voice and everyone has to lean in to listen, and he is automatically the most powerful person in the room. But he is not funny. That I stole from Mike Nichols. The way the cruelest cutting remark, if it is delivered with a tiny self-amused curlicue of irony, is the most effective instruction, the most memorable correction, because everyone laughs, even the target.”
However there was one aspect of Miranda was all Streep: her walk.
