The True Story behind ‘Inside’ and the Sick Real Life Phenomenon of Fetal Abduction

***WARNING: Genuinely disturbing***

Real life is stranger than fiction, right? ‘s 2007 horror Inside (A L’interieur) may be one of the ever made. The controversial plot sees a deranged woman violently break into another woman’s home and cut the baby from her womb with a pair of scissors.

Disturbing, yes, but what’s more upsetting is that this exact, horrific crime has happened on numerous occasions in real life. The phenomenon is known as Fetal Abduction, defined by The Guardian as the following:

Also known as caesarean kidnapping, it occurs when a woman desires a child so badly she is prepared to attack a mother-to-be and cut the baby from her womb, then try to pass it off as her own.

Experts have recorded 14 cases in the US in the last decade, as well as others around the world.

Forensic psychologist Theresa Porter explains more on the psyche of women who commit this most unthinkable of crimes, explaining that ‘perpetrators are driven more by narcissism and grandiose delusions than an obsession to nurture’:

“This is not the maternal urge run amok. There’s no evidence they bond with the babies they snatch. These women are often extreme con artists. They are psychologically impaired but the majority are not psychotic.”

Recent cases of Fetal Abduction

  • Illinois, 2006: Tiffany Hall, 24, sliced childhood friend Jimella Tunstall, 23, open with scissors in an attempt to steal her unborn baby, who died in the ordeal. Hall also killed Tunstall’s three kids by pushing them into a dryer. She is serving life without parole.
  • Maryland, 2009: Veronica Deramous, 40, held pregnant Teka Adams, 29, captive for five days, during which she tried to cut her baby out with a box cutter. Adams, incredibly, escaped, running for help clutching her own spilling innards to her body. Her baby, Miracle Sky, also survived the ordeal.
  • Wisconsin, 2011: Annette Morales-Rodriguez, 33, already had three children of her own when she offered pregnant Martiza Ramirez-Cruz, 23, a ride. She beat her with a baseball bat and attempted a caesarian that ‘she had seen on the Discovery Channel’. Both Cruz and her baby died.
