‘The White Queen’ Gets Its Sequel In ‘The White Princess’ With a Whole New Cast

In 2013, the miniseries The White Queen ran for ten episodes on Starz and the fans were left without any plans for a follow-up – until now. In May, Starz confirmed that the sequel, The White Princess, will have a total of 8 episodes and filming has just started. Production for the series started in February and on Monday Starz posted the first picture from the set.

The White Queen was based on Phillipa Gregory’s series of books ‘The Cousins’ War’ (‘The White Queen’, ‘The Red Queen’ and ‘The Kingmakers Daughter’). It was set in 1464, having the War of Roses as a backdrop, and it showed the War through the perspectives of the female characters, such as Elizabeth Woodville (a.k.a. The White Queen) and Margareth Beaufort (The Red Queen).

Following the events depicted in The White Queen, The White Princess – based on Phillipa’s novel of the same name – centers on Princess Elizabeth of York (daughter of Elizabeth Woodville and King Edward IV) and her marriage to King Henry VII, who is Margareth’s son.

What fans of the original show might have a hard time with is the fact that Starz has recast all the main characters for The White Princess. From Princess Elizabeth to Elizabeth Woodville herself, the upcoming series will bring a whole new set of faces onto the screen.

While the recasting might have some fans shaking their heads for the lack of continuity, it also brings its fair amount of great surprises. Game of Thrones‘ fans will recognize at least three familiar faces once The White Princess premieres in 2017. Michelle Fairley (Thrones‘ very own Catelyn Stark), Essie Davis (the recently departed Lady Crane) and Rebecca Benson (Sam Tarly’s adorable sister) will be playing Margareth Beaufort, Elizabeth Woodville and Margareth Plantagenet, respectively.

Also already cast and filming are Jacob Collins-Levy (Glitch), Joanne Whalley (The Borgias) and Suki Waterhouse (Insurgent) . Showrunner Emma Frost will continue to write and produce with Philippa Gregory, as they did for The White Queen.

The 8 episodes of The White Princess will be filmed in Bristol, England and no premiere date has been set for the show as of yet.
