It’s hard to believe that it’s almost been five years since The CW’s supernatural witch drama The Secret Circle graced our screens for its loved but short-lived run. First airing in October 2011, The Secret Circle was an adaptation of the novel series by L.J. Smith (who also wrote The Vampire Diaries novels) about a circle of young witches. But despite starting off with great ratings and being seen as a companion series to The Vampire Diaries, eventual declining ratings, expensive special effects and dramatic locations led to the show’s cancellation. The series may have untimely ended, but the cast moved on to other things. Let’s take a look at where the cast of The Secret Circle are now:
Britt Robertson has literally gone from strength to strength in her young career. Starting out with film roles in The Tenth Circle, Scream 4 and The First Time alongside Dylan O’Brien, Robertson was cast in the TV drama Life Unexpected. Upon its cancellation, she was cast as Cassie Blake in The CW’s The Secret Circle. Cassie is the new kid in town, who realises that her new friends harbor a secret that has a lot to do with her mom’s death. After The Secret Circle‘s cancellation, Robertson joined the cast of Under the Dome in 2013. After her stint on that show, she has since moved back into films, appearing in White Rabbit, Cake and most recently Tomorrowland alongside George Clooney. Expect to see her next in Mother’s Day, Mr. Church, The Space Between Us and A Dog’s Purpose. Something tells me that Robertson isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
You may remember Thomas Dekker for his breakout role of John Connor in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, or perhaps for his supporting roles in My Sister’s Keeper and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Well-versed in both film and TV, Dekker made his big comeback to the latter with 2011’s The Secret Circle. Playing the kind-hearted and always reliable Adam, the circle’s leader who couldn’t help but fall in love with the new girl Cassie. Since The Secret Circle‘s cancellation, Dekker has continued to act in films, starring in 2013’s Enter the Dangerous Mind, 2014’s Fear Clinic before once again returning to TV in 2015’s short-lived Backstrom. With a pretty fantastic resume that extends to TV, Film and even music videos, it’s safe to say that it won’t be long before the ultra-talented Thomas Dekker will be on our screens again.
Known for is iconic role as Brian Kinney on Showtime’s Queer as Folk, Harold is a veteran in the TV and Film industry. In 2011, he was cast as Charles Meade, the sometimes evil/sometimes nice father of Diana. Harold received praise for his performance in the pilot alone. Upon the series cancellation, Harold landed a recurring role in Defiance and has since starred in countless films, including: Field of Lost Shoes, Echo Park and Kiss Me, Kill Me. Harold has become a staple of television and for years, fans have been calling for a revival of Queer as Folk. Perhaps one day!
Shelley Hennig portrayed Diana Meade on The Secret Circle. Diana was the kind, good-hearted and compassionate co-leader of the Circle. The only problem was that she could see her boyfriend Adam (Dekker) falling more and more in love with Cassie (Robertson). Since the show’s cancellation, Hennig has amassed quite the resume of roles, most notably starring in the film Unfriended and joining the cast of Teen Wolf where she currently plays the role of Malia Tate. Go Shelley!
Playing the role of the eccentric loose-canon Faye Chamberlain, Tonkin gave the role her all, earning praise from many fans who loved her performance of the character. Since The Secret Circle‘s cancellation, Tonkin hasn’t been out of work, or out of work with the CW either. Not long after her show ended, Tonkin ended up in a recurring capacity on The Vampire Diaries as warewolf Hayley. Her featured capactiy was enough to earn her the lead role of the series spin-off The Originals where she has reprised her role of Hayley since 2012. With The Originals set to head into its fourth season, Tonkin is going to be remaining on our screens for quite some time to come. And thanks to her exhilarating characters, that is a good thing!
Jessica Parker Kennedy
I knew Jessica Parker Kennedy for her roles as Bette Sans Souci/Plastique in Smalville, her appearance in V and her role in the TV film Behemoth. So I was rather thrilled to see her in the main cast of The Secret Circle. Kennedy portrayed Melissa Glaser, also a member of the Circle and thus, also a Witch. But she was so much more than that – Melissa was also Faye’s closest friend and argubaly the most sensible and responsible member of the Circle, usually remaining quiet and keeping to herself. Kennedy has since had a recurring role on 90210 and landed a leading role in the Starz produced Black Sails. Quite the resume indeed, expect her to be sticking around as Black Sails is about to enter it’s fourth season.
Chris Zylka played bad boy Jake Armstrong on The Secret Circle. Known for his often rude mannerisms, he had a thing for Cassie despite leading Faye on at the same time. Since the role, Zylka has moved in film, appearing in Pirhana 3DD, The Amazing Spider-Man as “Flash” Thompson and a lead role in Dixieland. After recurring roles on series such as Twisted as well as starring in TV films, Zylka landed a main role in the HBO acclaimed series The Leftovers, in which he currently stars as Tommy Garvey.
The Secret Circle may have ended almost five years ago, but its cast didn’t let that stop them from carving out impressive careers for themselves. Since the series cancellation, fans have launched powerful campaigns in an attempt to get the series back on air, with the Twitition to “Save The Secret Circle” receiving the second-largest amount of signatures in the website’s history. That’s impressive! Hopefully one day we will see a revival of The Secret Circle but no matter what happens, it looks like the cast will be on our TV screens for many more years to come!
