While there has been no new news on where The Flarrowverse will be heading next year, the shows have been on fire recently with casting announcements. Arrow have been busy casting Vigilante and Wild Dog while Legends of Tomorrow have cast the new Vixen and Citizen Steel, so now it is The Flash’s turn. The hit CW series has just announced that they have cast Tom Felton as a series regular for Season 3.
While we have confirmation on who he will play…we still don’t exactly know who he will play. TV Line have an official description on the Harry Potter alum’s new role;
“Felton will play Julian Dorn, a fellow CSI at the Central City Police Department who suspects there’s more to Barry Allen than just his good guy reputation.”
The one thing we know for sure is that Felton is playing the mystery character that was reported earlier this month to be joining The Flash. While his name has been reported as Julian Dorn, fans of Arrow and The Flash know never to trust a mystery character’s “true name”. We have been deceived before with Harrison Wells and Isabella Rochev, who later donned the monikers of Reverse Flash and Raveger respectively, so we know better that Felton’s character will later turn out to play a well known DC character. The question now is, “Who will he become?”. There are two characters that fit the description and would fit in with The Flash, and one just happens to be a member of The Rogues;
When it was announced we would have a series regular who would be “Barry’s contemporary”, I guessed that they would bring Doctor Alchemy to the show. The previous casting call stated;
For Season 3, the CW hit is casting the major recurring character of Barry’s slightly older, slightly geekier contemporary, a guy who is as smart as he is intuitive. As such, this newcomer doesn’t buy Barry’s nice guy routine and sets out to learn what he’s hiding — all while concealing some secrets of his own….
The character is now confirmed to be a fellow CSI meaning he has a passion for science, just like Doctor Alchemy. The “all while concealing some secrets of his own” part is the most intriguing aspect of the character description. This all but confirms that he leads a dual life, most likely a supervillain persona, that will be the main focus of Season 3. All signs point to the inclusion of Doctor Alchemy and considering he is one of two main rogues yet to be brought onto the show, the other being Mirror Master, I’d say this is the most likely theory.
This would be a great surprise reveal for The Flash. Doctor Death is well known for being the first traditional supervillain that Batman has faced, but that doesn’t mean The Flash can’t bring him on for Season 3. The mad scientist is known for his chemical weapons, Felton’s character works at CCPD’s CSI department, which would challenge Barry in a way that Reverse Flash and Zoom never could. Instead of using his speed to defeat his enemy, he will have to use his mind which is what Barry Allen was well known for before he gained his powers.
But what secret could the character could keep if he was Doctor Death? In the earlier 2000’s, Death was revived in a Batgirl series where he sold chemical and biological weapons on the black market. This would make sense as Death could find the materials he needs to make these weapons at the CSI department, and thus have other people use his weapons instead of himself. This would mean that Barry would be hunting down villains that Death supplies, while he works from the shadows, or in this case “from the crime lab”.
Whoever Tom Felton will play in The Flash Season Three, we can only hope that Cisco makes some Harry Potter references. The show has made Jaws references to King Shark and even allowed Mark Hamill to make references to Star Wars so this is a must!
The Flash will be appearing at San Diego Comic Con so hopefully we can receive some insight into Felton’s character then. This is the first major news reveal that we have received on The Flash front since Grant Gustin announced Flashpoint will be the title of Episode One of Season 3. One can only imagine if there is more news coming down the line.
