that fan favorite actor and comedian, Donald Glover, would be joining the already star studded cast of Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. Best known for his roles on the hit television shows Community and 30 Rock, the actor’s name always comes up whenever a Spider-Man project is underway. Fans loved his vocal performance of Miles Morales (a different Spider-Man) in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man. Donald is joining the likes of Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, and Robert Downey Jr. in the joint Sony/Marvel film. The biggest question coming out of this casting news, however, is who exactly will he play?
4. Miles Morales
Despite being the fan favorite pick, it seems highly unlikely that Donald will be portraying the young Spider-Man. There’s several reasons why this pick wouldn’t make much sense. Tom Holland is portraying Peter Parker, he’s barely 20 years old. Donald is 32. In order for the Miles/Peter dynamic to work well, Miles has to be younger. Miles doesn’t become Spider-Man until a tragic event involving Peter Parker occurs, therefor, Donald will probably not play this character, but we can still hope, right?
3. Vincent Gonzales
Vin is Peter’s roommate in college and a rookie police officer. Since Homecoming takes place while Peter is in high school, it could be interesting to see Vin introduced in a small role now before becoming a bigger part of Peter’s life. Throughout their time together, Vin proves to more foe than friend to Peter. Many incidents due to Peter’s status as Spider-Man put Vin in hot water, and several times Vin has actively tried to turn public opinion against Spider-Man. Donald is a very capable actor, but Vin isn’t really a comedic character, so playing Vincent could prove to showcase a different side of the actor.
2. Randy Robertson
Randy is the son of Robbie Robertson, a high ranking editor at the Daily Bugle (which come to think of it, Donald could play that role too if they made the character a bit younger). Randy is a friend of Peter and a staunch supporter of student activism. He seeks to better the world and the community and promotes social change. Randy has a long history with Peter, though they don’t become very close until later in their lives. If they wanted to portray Donald as a bit younger, than Randy makes a perfect choice. On the flip side, I could also see Donald playing Robbie Robertson as they’ve already made Aunt May considerably younger.
1. Tom “Goliath” Foster
For me, this choice makes the most sense. Donald has the potential to stick around the MCU for a very long time. Tom Foster is the son of the original Goliath, Ben Foster. After Ben’s death in the Civil War story line, Tom picks up the mantle and fights against crime and injustice. Tom has ties to Wakanda (and in turn Black Panther), Ant-Man and the Wasp (as he uses Pym Particles to grow in size), Tony Stark aka Iron Man, and the Damage Control team (which he had joined); all of which have upcoming projects within the MCU. That being said, Donald could become an integral member of the cinematic universe if given the chance. If he does play this character, we could see him show up again in Black Panther, the upcoming Damage Control television show, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and many, many more.
There are many, many more possibilities for who Donald Glover could play in the upcoming movie, but I believe these four are the most likely. As we don’t have much details as to the plot or other characters, it’s hard to say for certain whose most likely. Who would you like to see Donald play? Somebody already on this list? Or somebody else? Let us know in the comments below!
