‘Transformers 5’: Why Optimus Prime Is The Last Knight

The final moments of Age of Extinction saw our fearless leader Optimus Prime deliver an ominous message to the enigmatic Creators:

“Leave planet Earth alone, cause I’m coming — for you.”

Leaving Earth behind, Optimus looks poised for an intergalactic battle in the upcoming Transformers movie, revealed yesterday as The Last Knight. If we’re to assume that The Last Knight picks up where Age of Extinction left off, it looks like Optimus — and perhaps a bit of backstory — will be the focus of Michael Bay’s next high-octane film. If Optimus is the last knight, then Transformers 5 could very well reveal to Optimus (and us) the history of his home planet, the fabled Knights of Cybertron and the Thirteen.
AOE‘s Setup For The Last Knight
While imprisoned aboard Lockdown’s ship in Age of Extinction, Optimus learns that the mysterious Creators are systematically hunting down the ‘bots on Earth because of their interactions with humans. The first target of the Creators’ wrath? The Thirteen. While Optimus has little recollection of who the Creators or the Thirteen are, he knows that the bounty on his head puts Earth in danger. After Optimus escapes capture and emerges victorious in battle against Lockdown and Galvatron, he decides he’ll make things easier for the Creators by bringing the fight to them. This could set up some seriously awesome, otherworldly warfare in Transformers 5.

But who exactly are the Thirteen? and what’s Optimus’s relationship to them? The Aligned ThirteenThe all-powerful Primus created the thirteen Primes to help defeat his evil twin, Unicron. Each of these original robots were bestowed with a particular power or artifact that made them formidable in battle. While he was not gifted with an extraordinary ability, Optimus was said to be most closely aligned with the spark of Primus, giving him great prowess and lead him to acting as the visionary leader and source of unity and morality for the Thirteen. His mantra of “All are one” was used to unite the Thirteen tribes during the first Cybertronian World War.
Originally, the Aligned storyline was separate from the rest of the Transformers universe but was later retconned, revealing Optimus’s position as the final of the Thirteen, hence his title as “The Last Prime.” The Thirteen Primes led the tribes of Cybertronian society after the mythical Knights of Cybertron left the planet on a goodwill mission to spread enlightenment throughout the galaxy. These Knights were the original wielders of the Matrix of Leadership, the same artifact that Sam used to resurrect Optimus in Revenge of the Fallen.

At the end of the first Cybertronian World War, Optimus relinquished his Prime role, choosing to be reborn as one of the lesser transformers, known as Orion Pax. His rebirth completely wiped his memory of his previous life and he chose to lead a simpler life to better understand the future of his robotic race. Now, we see Optimus determined to uncover the truth about his past and stop the Creators before they bring more destruction to the galaxy. While Optimus doesn’t yet recognize the importance of his role as one of the Thirteen, there are a few things that show us he’s more than ready to take on the mantle of the Last Knight of Cybertron. For example:He’s Wielded Several Of The Artifacts

Though Optimus may not have possessed the same unique qualities of the other thirteen, he has shown his worth as a warrior and a leader by utilizing various weapons and artifacts owned by others including the Forge of Solus Prime, Cyber Caliber, The Blades of Time, Key to Vector Sigma, The Star Saber and the mighty Prime Decepticon Hunter, which Optimus almost exclusively uses as a sword. The Matrix of Leadership has already come back into his possession and now with his new weaponry, Optimus has slowly amassed the tools he will need to fight the Creators. He’s Already Suited Up His Armor (Sorta)

While it never made it into the final cut of Age of Extinction, artist Josh Nizzi created this awesome artwork that depicts Optimus in his upgraded knight armor. Too bad we didn’t get to see OP in all his chrome glory, but perhaps his powered-up armor will make an appearance in Transformers 5? He Rode Into Battle On A DinobotIt appears that Optimus has all of the qualities of a chivalrous and battle-bound knight: He’s got the armor, the weapons, and the willpower of a warrior. All that he’s missing is a badass steed to ride into battle. Oh wait:

Lemme hear your warcry!

Lemme hear your warcry!

Like a true (boss) knight, Optimus charged into battle atop a freaking Tyrannosaurus Rex! While he released the Dinobots at the end of Age of Extinction, maybe we’ll be treated to something bigger and badder as Optimus uncovers more of his history as one of Cybertron’s knights.
What’s Next? We’ll have to wait and see which direction Michael Bay plans on taking Transformers 5 in, as screenwriter Ehren Kruger revealed that Bay is notorious for rewriting entire scripts. Where exactly the franchise will go from here remains to be seen. But don’t let the name fool you — The Last Knight is far from the end Transformers. In fact, director Michael Bay has hired a team of writers to churn out a Transformer movie every year until 2020. Let ’em roll out!
