just won’t die.
Another installment in the Friday the 13th series is currently in development, and in an producer Brad Fuller revealed that the next in the horror franchise will go back to the beginning with a new take on the origin of Jason Voorhees.
The upcoming movie has yet to find a director, though screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski is . The writer is best known for his work on director Denis Vileneuve’s 2013 thriller Prisoners. As Fuller noted:
“Aaron’s story has great characters…You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward.”
But make no mistake, this isn’t a straight-up origin story. Fuller went on to clarify that the script is “origin-ish,” showing a new take on the slasher villain as well as his mother Pamela. Fans of the original Friday the 13th will remember that — SPOILER WARNING — Pamela Voorhees was the original killer, seeking vengeance for the tragic death of her son Jason. Jason Voorhees made his first appearance as the killer in 1981’s Friday the 13th Part 2. As Fuller promised, “it’s a little bit different from what you’ve seen before.”
Jason’s last appearance was in 2009’s Friday the 13th, a reboot of the series that blended elements from the first three films. There’s no word yet on whether or not the new film will be a prequel to that reboot or a standalone project, but that should make little difference. Jason’s been to Hell, traveled to space and held his own against . As long as Jason Voorhees is killing teens (preferably in creative ways), the Friday the 13th series will live on.
