Disney Pixar has mastered a formula to bring the very best animated movies possible to their very dedicated fan base. Over the past 21 years, Pixar has released iconic movies such as Toy Story and The Incredibles, rarely dropping the ball on captivating audiences. It would appear failure is not a word Pixar is familiar with, which is why creating a new Pixar movie takes some serious time. Over the past few weeks, the world has seen the release of the highly anticipated Finding Dory, the sequel to the 2003 Finding Nemo. Unsurprisingly, the film is being met with and . With so much success in the past, I think it’s about time we look at the future.
Over a year and a half ago, I wrote an . At this time, three of those movies have been released, two of which to huge (predictable success). Today, we’ll be taking a look at the four Pixar movies slated for release in the next few years, and which ones I’m thinking will be met with the most success. Pixar has three sequels in the wings and one original movie, but fear not, that the four movies after the current schedule will all be originals. This list will be done according to release date, so without further ado let’s look at the exciting list of upcoming Pixar flicks.
4. Cars 3
Release date: June 16, 2017
The Cars franchise is truly an anomaly in the world of Pixar. How a film that was anything but loved by critics gets a second sequel and a spin-off series with two entries is beyond most logical minds. It would make the most sense if we saw a Rationale 2 or the highly awaited Incredibles 2 before get a third Cars movie, but alas that’s not how things are happening. Now, I’m personally a fan of the first Cars movie, but hopes for Cars 3 are not terribly high. I feel a bit better after hearing John Lasseter’s remarks:
“Lightning McQueen, he’s awesome. We’ve got some great new characters, some great racing in it. It’s a very emotional story. It’s a little bit more akin to Cars 1, where you get into a deep emotion with him. It’s really a special story. It’s very emotional and his relationship with Doc Hudson, and his memory of Doc Hudson.”
Hearing this gives me a bit of hope that this sequel is closer to a emotional Pixar movie, rather than a cash grab relying on children’s love of talking vehicles. All in all, I know I’ll end up seeing this film regardless, so hopefully it turns out alright.
Release date: November 22, 2017
The only original movie on Pixar’s current slate, I’m hoping that Coco goes the way of Inside Out as opposed to the forgettable The Good Dinosaur. The film is inspired by the Mexican holiday Dia de Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. The story will follow a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who sets off a series of events relating to a centuries old mystery. The official story descritpion reads:
“Coco is the celebration of a lifetime, where the discovery of a generations-old mystery leads to a most extraordinary and surprising family reunion.”
Despite facing early in the film making process, Coco now seems on its way to become a classic. Pixar began animation on the film in April of this year, so hopefully it won’t be to long until we get to see some images and can really get our hopes up. The film is also be directed by Lee Unkrich who directed the Best Picture nominee Toy Story 3. I’m really excited for this one, whether it will be any good or not is yet to be seen, but coming from Pixar, chances are it will be.
2. Toy Story 4
Release date: June 15, 2018
I’m conflicted on this one. On the one hand, I love the Toy Story franchise, it’s easily one of the greatest things Pixar has ever produced. While on the other hand, Toy Story 3 was such a perfect ending for our favorite group of toys. However, again Mr John Lasseter puts some of my fears to rest:
“Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”
If the mastermind behind the most beloved animated movies of all time is this excited for the film, I guess I should be too. Of the four movies on this list, we probably now the most about this one. It’s going to be a love story revolving around Woody and Bo Peep, it was a very well kept secret for a long time (so well kept that even the President of Pixar and Disney Animation didn’t even know it was being made), Woody and Buzz will be working together to find Bo Peep and bring her home as she was absent in Toy Story 3, famed composer Randy Newman will return to compose, and fan favorites Mr. Potato Head and Trixie will be returning. If that isn’t enough to get you excited yet, than I’m sure we’ll be getting more news soon enough.
1. The Incredibles 2
Release date: June 21, 2019
I cannot stress this enough: I can’t wait for this movie! The Incredibles is probably my favorite movie of all time, we are living in what I call the “Golden Age of Superheroes” (or as I’ve also heard it called the “Superhero Renaissance”), and I’ve been waiting for this movie for 15 years! Unfortunately, we still have to wait another few years, so details about the movie are hard to come by. We know that since the second installment to the world of The Incredibles comes 15 years after the original, the timeline will mirror reality with the events of the film taking place 15 years after the events of The Incredibles. What that means, I presume, is we’ll be seeing a teenage Jack Jack tackling the responsibilities of being a super and the stress of being a teen, Violet and Dash will be fully established heroes in their own rights while trying to balance a family life, and more than likely Mr. and Mrs. Parr will be happily living in retirement. Knowing Pixar, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if we learned that Mr. Incredible died fighting crime since Pixar loves breaking our hearts (or have y’all forgotten about Up?), and with so many supers dying in The Incredibles we know nobody is safe. Of course, all of this is just the wild ravings of a fan who can’t wait to see the sequel to my favorite movie!
Personally, I’m most excited for The Incredibles 2, but I have high hopes for the success of Toy Story 4 and Coco. Will Cars 3 prove to be successful? I’m going to go with a solid “no”, critics won’t like it much but it’ll do fine at the box office and we’ll probably see a Cars 4 down the line (speaking of which are there too many sequels in Hollywood?) What Pixar movie are you most looking forward to? What else would you like to see from Pixar in the coming years? Let me know in the comments below!
