*WARNING: Minor spoilers ahead for X-Men: Apocalypse. Read at your own risk.*
X-Men: Apocalypse might still be in theaters, but eager audiences are already looking forward to Hugh Jackman’s next solo outing as fan favorite mutant Wolverine. And now, it appears we may have a title for the currently tentatively titled Wolverine 3.
A rumor first reported by GameZone suggests that the coming movie will be titled Weapon X, referencing the secret government organization that turned Wolverine into the killing machine we know and love.
The rumor comes from a reportedly reliable and anonymous source who also claims that the title, poster and footage from the film will be revealed at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
While there’s no official word on the film’s title, Weapon X would make sense, given recent events in the X-Men movies. In X-Men: Apocalypse, fans saw Wolverine violently escape the Weapon X facility, with the film’s post-credits scene showing obtaining Weapon X’s research. The Essex reference was a major Easter Egg for X-fans, opening the doors for a future appearance of comic book villain Mister Sinister. Fans will also recall that Weapon X played a major role in Deadpool, unlocking mercenary Wade Wilson’s latent mutant powers and turning him into Deadpool. With so much Weapon X on the big screen, it would definitely make sense for the group to appear in Wolverine 3.
No More Old Man Logan?
that Wolverine 3 would have a storyline influenced by 2008’s Old Man Logan comics, which followed an older Wolverine on a violent cross-country adventure. Weapon X didn’t play a role in the comics, though necessary could inject the shadowy government organization into the narrative. The group is a major part of Wolverine’s backstory, and with now-increased importance across the X-Men films, it could better connect the character’s next solo adventure to the franchise as a whole.
Wolverine 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on March 3, 2017. Do you think Weapon X will play a role in the film? Let us know in the comments.
