According to The Hollywood Reporter, a DC spin-off movie is in the works that would feature Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the lead role. However, there’s a twist: it wouldn’t be a solo Harley Quinn movie, but instead would feature several of DC comics female characters – both heroes and villains. According to the report, names like Batgirl and Birds of Prey were mentioned, but other than that the project is being closely guarded with little information available as of yet.
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has yet to be seen onscreen – she will be making her debut appearance in Suicide Squad, which is due for release on August 5th. From the trailers and snippets released, Robbie appears to be great in the role. Being no stranger to acting, Robbie started her career on Australian soap opera Neighbours before transitioning into films, starring in box office hits including The Wolf of Wall Street and Focus. Harley Quinn was created by Paul Dini back in 1993 as a character for the hugely popular Batman: The Animated Series. Being arguably the most famous original creation from a TV series, the character went on to be featured in almost all of the Batman adaptations that would follow, and is strongly thought to be a key villain in Batman mythology.
A film based on DC’s female villains and superheroes would be revolutionary and most likely draw from the Birds of Prey source material. There are no shortage of characters that could be used in the film, as DC has arguably as many female characters as they do male characters, ranging from The Huntress, Batgirl and Talia Al Ghul to Poison Ivy or the Black Canary. The short-lived cult classic Birds of Prey TV series focused on several of these characters, and there was also Gotham Girls – an interactive web spin off series featuring characters from Batman: The Animated Series. As very little information is available to us right now we can only speculate what characters will be used in the film, but as the DCEU continues to expand I’m finding myself looking forward to this film the most!
