This past weekend the U.S had a few big movies hit theaters, an animated comedy for the kids, a raunchy comedy sequel for the teens and a more mature, stylish comedy for the adults. The Angry Birds Movie, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys all hit the big screen, but which movie took the #1 spot at the box office?
Here are the TOP 5 movies at the U.S domestic box office for the weekend of April 20th 2016:
1) The Angry Birds Movie – $39 Million
We pretty much all expected this movie to come out on top, Civil War has been out for a couple of weeks now and you can never underestimate the power of an animated film, especially one based on a hugely popular game. The movie was projected to open at about $38 Million, I was guessing around $35 due to mixed reviews. You can check out my review of The Angry Birds Movie here.
2) Captain America: Civil War – $33.1 Million
In it’s third week, Captain America: Civil War is still doing extremely well. The movie has now crossed $1 Billion worldwide. The faith that fans have in Marvel studios and the overwhelmingly positive reviews have made Captain America: Civil War a gigantic success for Marvel. I was hoping that Civil War would yet again take the #1 spot, purely because it’s a much better film than Angry Birds.
3) Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – $21.7 Million
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising garnered mostly positive reviews, many critics, including myself even preferring this film over the original, but apparently that didn’t mean much to the general audience as this sequel opened up to $28 Million less than it’s predecessor. Neighbors opened to $49 Million back in 2014 and received strong reviews, so ultimately this does look like a failure on the behalf of the marketing. There was little to no interest sparked in the general audience for a Neighbors sequel and not a lot of buzz in the run up to it’s release, I can safely say that hopes of a Neighbors 3 are probably a lot lower than they were before this weekend. I’m guessing that the budget of this sequel was around $20 Million, so Sorority Rising will probably end up being profitable, but when compared to the success of the original, this isn’t a great sign. You can check out my review of Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising here.
4) The Nice Guys – $11.2 Million
Shane Black’s The Nice Guys was never a film I expected to do extremely well, even with two major stars in the lead and great critical reception. This is a niche film that was never going to make an incredible amount of money, especially when going up against an animation and a comedy sequel.
5) The Jungle Book – $11 Million
The Jungle Book has now grossed $857 Million worldwide, an amount that Disney must be incredibly happy with. Disney must be fighting hard to bring back Favreau for the sequel. I expect this is the last week that The Jungle Book will be in the TOP 5 as two major franchise films are hitting screens next week.
