What 2016 Movie Can Beat ‘Captain America: Civil War’ At the Box Office?

It’s no surprise that , at least so far. The movie has grossed over 1.1 billion dollars in about a month since its release in theaters and is currently sitting at the 15th highest grossing film of all time worldwide. To see where it currently ranks, . 2015 was a great year at the box office with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Age of Ultron pulling in loads of cash. However, Furious 7 and Jurassic World were movies that were predicted to make a good amount of money, but not the humongous amount they did.

Captain America: Civil War will probably make another 100-150 million dollars before it exits theaters and will most likely sit in the top 10 highest grossing films of all time. If I had to guess, I would say it will take the number 9 spot between Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($1,341 billion) and [passing] Frozen ($1,276 billion). Given all of this, we can’t officially declare Captain America: Civil War the highest grossing movie of 2016 as we still have the rest of the year, which includes the summer and holiday box office seasons, especially after we saw movies such as Jurassic World which climbed to the number 4 spot of all time out of nowhere. So, what movies this year could steal the highest grossing movie of 2016 from Captain America and Iron Man?

Finding Dory

Coming to theaters June 17th is Finding Dory, the sequel to one of the best and most successful Pixar movies of all time: Finding Nemo. The movie made 936 million dollars back in 2003. Now, 13 years later, everyone has seen the movie and will go out and see Finding Dory. With a good word of mouth, even more people will go out and see it. If there is any animated movie to make a boatload of money, it’s a Pixar movie that will do it. Pixar was still building its name back in 2003 and most people realized how good Finding Nemo was after it was in theaters. Therefore, I think if this movie gets a good score on Rotten Tomatoes (like most of Pixar’s films) and it gets a good word of mouth, there is a big chance that this movie skyrocket to the top of the box office, passing Captain America: Civil War.

Suicide Squad

While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice under performed at the box office to say the least, Suicide Squad may fix those mistakes. Comic book fans and non-comic book fans alike are really looking forward to August 5th, when Suicide Squad hits theaters. This movie has gained a lot more attention then predicted and if positive reviews and a good word of mouth follow, a ton of people will go out and see this movie. Also, if it really is that good, there will be a huge replay value as this movie is going to have a lot going on and is going to include lots of humor and action. Passing Captain America: Civil War may be a stretch, but this movie keeps gaining more and more attention. Also, after watching Avatar and Jurassic World at the box office, nothing is impossible anymore.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Let’s be realistic here: if Captain America: Civil War is going to be de-throned by any movie, it will be Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, because it’s a Star Wars movie. The key to having this movie crush records at the box office is advertising. This movie has little to no familiar characters and to people who don’t follow the Star Wars movies that well will be truly confused by this spin-off film. If Disney and LucasFilm advertise the movie in such a way that gets people aware of what the film is about and get them invested, this film could potentially go far places.
