What Does Margaery’s Note Mean on ‘Game Of Thrones?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Season 6, Episodes 6-7 of Game of Thrones. If you haven’t caught up then you should stop reading now. Remember, It is not I who has the authority to stop spoilers, it is the mother and her mercy!

Since her first appearance on the show, Margaery Tyrell has almost always had an agenda. That’s a fact. So, you can imagine my confusion over her current allegiance with the High Sparrow. If we go back to two weeks ago, we had the shock of our lives when Margaery announced her alignment with the Faith, she appeared totally devoted and so critical of her ‘former’ self. This does not sound like the Margaery that we all know. However, I haven’t been able to shake the feeling that Margaery has an agenda – especially now that she convinced Tommen to join the alliance with the Faith.

However, my suspicions were almost confirmed this week when Margaery had tea with her grandmother – the fabulously fierce Lady Olenna. When they were arguing over Margaery’s ‘conversion’, Margaery subtly slipped a piece of paper into her grandmothers hand. Later when Olenna was alone, she opened the piece of paper to reveal a drawing of a rose. Olenna smiles before leaving.

What does this mean? I hear you ask, well let me explain: The rose is the sigil of house Tyrell, so by placing this note in her grandmother’s hand, Margaery is clearly putting Olenna’s mind at rest by confirming that she is and always will be loyal to house Tyrell.

So, why the alliance? Margaery appeared to be converted the episode after her visit with Loras. If we remember back to this visit, Loras was a wreck – decrepit and a shadow of his former pretty, pompous self. He pleaded with Margaery to “make it stop”. Perhaps this new alliance with the Faith is Margaery’s way of buying her brother some time. Moreover, now that she is on the inside, she can destroy the cult that so brutally humiliated her and her family. By convincing the High Sparrow that she’s a new woman, Margaery is now their poster girl for letting the mother’s mercy through – the Sparrows need her to help them continue their mission. Moreover, the fact that she managed to convince Tommen to pledge his allegiance has furthered her front – to the High Sparrow, the Faith is now unstoppable with the power of the crown at their disposal. This is the perfect opportunity for Margaery to stab him in the back and exact revenge. There’s also the fact that her conversion prevented her from having to complete a walk of atonement.

With Margaery’s admission of loyalty to house Tyrell, one can only ponder where this storyline will go in the future. Let’s hope that she can manage to get herself and Loras free before exacting revenge on those who have wronged her. Margaery always did play games to get what she wanted. I’d almost feel sorry for the High Sparrow. You know what they say: Hell hath no fury…

Bitch, please.
