What Rey saw in her ‘Force Vision’

So it’s been a little bit of time since Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out on Blu-Ray/DVD, and if you’re like me, you’ve seen it multiple times already. I may or may not be watching it right now. One of my favorite scenes is Rey’s Force Vision. People have already been talking about this for months now, but I wanted to put my own take on it….

One thing I really enjoyed from the movie was the use of mythology. George Lucas has been doing that from the beginning, and now JJ Abrams put his own spin on it. From the minute Obi-Wan gave Luke Anakin’s lightsaber, it screamed “Excalibur.” The mentor passing the magical sword down to the next generation. A sword, apparently, only one person can wield. According to the Attack of the Clones Visual Dictionary, Anakin constructed his original lightsaber while in a trance. He used the same design in the next movie. Luke, of course, lost the lightsaber (along with his hand) in Cloud City. Somehow, Maz Kanata (yet another Mentor) got her hands on it and has been keeping it safe in her basement. Now, it calls out to Rey….

From ‘s article on Rey’s Force Vision:

> Rey touches the lightsaber.

Yes, Anakin’s lightsaber. And Luke’s.

> She screams as she is transported to a blue-lit hallway which resembles Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader’s iconic fight took place.

Yeah, you know: “I am your father.”

I also believe that there was some Mustafar hallway in the vision as well…

> Rey turns and walks down the hallway. At the same time, we can hear Yoda (Frank Oz) saying, “Its energy …,” then trailing off.

> Rey runs, then the hallway turns sideways taking her to a new setting as Yoda is heard again saying: “… surrounds us …”

> An unknown man, believed to be Luke, yells “No!” (assumed to be following a scene where young padawans have been slaughtered).

NOOOOOO

NOOOOOO

So that whole quote was actually Obi-Wan’s:

The Force is an energy field created by all living things, it surrounds us, it penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together…

> The next scene shows R2-D2 next to a hooded person, who is assumed to be Luke. Yoda then says: “… and binds us …”

> The hooded person places a robotic hand on R2 and Rey is then seen crouching on a muddy ground and rain pours.

> Rey turns her head then sees a man stabbed in the back with a red lightsaber. The man screams.

Here’s my theory on the Knights of Ren. Not one of them, save Kylo Ren, has a lightsaber. One guy in armor actually appears to be killed by Ren, so who knows what that means. It seems that the Knights of Ren are just dark-siders in bad-ass armor and weaponry, they all seem to have blasters or axes or something. Maybe they’re all just as emo as Ren with no real Force-powers. But why kill one of his own men?

> Rey stands and walks backwards. Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness) then says: “The Force will be …”

> The camera zooms out and Rey is then seen standing in front of the Knights of Ren, led by Kylo. Kylo looks at Rey and she backs away, then the scene alters again.

> Rey finds herself in Jakku, watching her younger self looking at the sky and screaming as she is dragged by the arm by Jakku junkboss, Unkar. The young Rey screams: “No! Come back!” Unkar hushes her and says: “Quiet girl.”

> Young Rey screams “No!” again. Rey turns to find out that the younger Rey is looking at a ship flying away. The sky then turns from blue to black and a red light then beams outwards.

Come back!
Come back!

What member of the Solo or Skywalker family would willingly leave their daughter (who is Force-sensitive) on another planet and never come back?

> The scene changes. Rey then finds herself in a snowy forest.

TRAITOR!

> Rey runs and Obi-Wan calls out saying: “Rey?”

The way he says this is almost like a surprise. Like Obi-Wan didn’t expect Rey in the Force. And it’s Alec Guinness’ voice as Obi-Wan.

The Force can tell the future, but it’s hazy and the seer may not understand what they are seeing….

> Rey falls back in fear. Obi-Wan then says: “These are your first steps.” His voice fades.

Now the Obi-Wan voice is Ewan Macgregor’s.
