In March this year, Marvel launched what they called their ‘Women of Power’ event – a move to add strong, powerful female characters to their many mobile games. This was perfectly timed to coincide with a ‘Women of Power’ range of comics, with variant covers featuring some of their most iconic superheroes. Today, at SDCC, we learned that Marvel will be going one step further. In Marvel’s House of Ideas panel, the company announced a new game – Women of Power!
We weren’t told much about the game; in fact, only two characters who’ll appear were even named. So let’s take a look at the characters who could well make the cut…
One of only two characters already confirmed to be in the game, Black Widow – played by Scarlett Johansson – is one firm fan-favorite. The future looks bright for the skilled assassin, with rumored to be close to signing off on a Black Widow movie. Meanwhile, in the comics, she remains one of the most important Avengers.
Marvel’s hardest-hitting superheroine, Captain Marvel – formerly Ms. Marvel – is sure to make an appearance. Since about 2000, in the comics; she’s one of two stars in the current ” ” event (which sees Captain Marvel go head-to-head with Iron Man). What’s more, the character is soon to make her MCU debut, where she’ll be played by . With so much exposure, she’s a dead cert for being in the game.
Inspired by Clint Barton, Kate Bishop is a master-archer who shares the codename ‘Hawkeye’. She’s smart and sassy, and the interaction between Kate and Clint has made her the breakout character of the popular Young Avengers comic. I really wouldn’t be surprised if Kate appeared.
hasn’t really made her presence felt yet, but she’s going to be front-and-center of Marvel NOW! This teenage genius reverse-engineered the Iron Man armor, much to Tony Stark’s horror, and is soon to become the new Invincible Iron Man. Given the Women of Power game is likely to be released soon, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this new Iron (wo)Man appears. It would be good timing, with her appearance in the game coinciding with Marvel’s putting a lot of effort into pushing the character.
is Marvel’s most popular ‘ ‘, inspired by Carol Danvers’s example to take up the mantle of Ms. Marvel! She’s an Inhuman with the ability to manipulate her own mass – think a combination of Ant-Man, Giant-Man, and Mr. Fantastic, with a touch of Mystique shapeshifting thrown in too! The Ms. Marvel comics are tremendously popular, not least as a celebration of youth culture, and we know she’s going to appear – she’s one of only two superheroes who were confirmed in the initial announcement!
Played by Elizabeth Olsen in the MCU, Scarlet Witch is one of Marvel’s greatest powerhouses. Over in the comics, her powerset’s recently been switched up from being a probability manipulator – wielding so-called ‘Hex Magic’ – to a full-on witch. In the MCU, Scarlet Witch is ; she’s a telepath and telekinetic, with pretty awesome power levels! As one of the most prominent Marvel women, she’s got to make an appearance.
In a sense one of the first ‘ ‘, She-Hulk is an absolute powerhouse! When Bruce Banner donated his blood to save the life of cousin Jennifer Walters, he unwittingly created the not-so-savage She-Hulk! Where Bruce Banner loses control when he ‘Hulks out’, Jennifer retains control – well, mostly. The reality is that becoming She-Hulk seems to amplify her sex drive, so She-Hulk is easily one of the most sexually active characters in Marvel Comics. With strength to rival the Thing, the Jade Giantess isn’t one to dismiss! She’s also always been popular in Marvel’s games, so has a fair chance of appearing.
The breakout character of “Spider-Verse”, is an alt-universe character from a reality in which Gwen Stacy was bitten by the radioactive spider, not Peter Parker! She’s a phenomenally popular character, and – with the current event in Avengers Academy – has made her way into every single one of Marvel’s most popular games. She’s a dead cert.
Yes, that’s right, over in the comics right now Thor is a woman! Jane Foster has taken possession of Mjolnir, gaining the powers of Thor, and wields the hammer in defence of Earth and Asgard both! The current run of The Mighty Thor is tremendously popular, and she’s a real fan-favorite. I think the odds are good that we’ll soon see the female Thunder God in Women of Power!
The Wasp is one of Marvel’s oldest characters – in fact, over in the comics she literally named the Avengers! Wielding the power of Pym Particles, Janet Van Dyne is the classic Wasp, and her legacy ran through the plot of the Ant-Man movie (she’d been lost in the mysteries of the Quantum Realm). She may well return in Ant-Man and the Wasp, though. The current series of All-New All-Different Avengers has introduced us to a new ‘ ‘ version of the Wasp, and Marvel is clearly making a real push with the character. I wouldn’t be surprised if she crops up.
So there you have it – ten Marvel-ous women who may well appear in Women of Power! We really don’t know much about the game (we only got a mention of the name at SDCC), but Marvel’s mobile games are always top-rate. Keep an eye on Now Loaded for more news!
