A few weeks ago, JoBlo broke a that confirmed one of the long rumored Spidey villains in the Vulture, would indeed be the primary antagonist in Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, he will not be alone as JoBlo also stated that one of Spider-Man’s lesser known villains would also be joining the Vulture. That villain is none other than the Terrible Tinkerer.
Who is the Terrible Tinkerer?
Before I get into why this particular villain is fit to be in Spider-Man: Homecoming, let’s first discuss who this villain really is.
The Terrible Tinkerer was first introduced in the second Amazing Spider-Man comic book story named “The Uncanny Threat of the Terrible Tinkerer.” The Tinkerer’s real name is Phineas Mason who owns and operates a repair shop somewhere in downtown New York City. He is best known for fixing or ‘tinkering’ with specific devices, which is where his name derives from.
In the story, Peter finds out that the Tinkerer has been communicating with an unknown alien race who plan on stealing military and scientific research by intercepting radio devices around the world. This could only be possible with the help of the Tinkerer who is keen with different types of gadgets. Fortunately, Spider-Man is there to stop his progress even though the Tinkerer gets away in the end.
Why He Should be in ‘Spider-Man Homecoming’
In some of the other comic book stories, the Tinkerer has repaired gadgets and machinery for villains such as the Grim Reaper, Mysterio, Kingpin, and yes even the Vulture. JoBlo has also confirmed his purpose in Spider-Man: Homecoming, saying that the Tinkerer will be the one,
“Who will help him (Vulture) build his suit with recovered Chitauri tech from the Battle of New York.”
This makes a great deal of sense. We know that the Chitauri played a major role in the attack on New York City from the first Avengers movie. Peter at the time however, was not Spider-Man yet as we learned from Captain America: Civil War that he had only been Spider-Man over the past six months.
Avengers: Age of Ultron also shed some more light on the Chitauri, as Tony Stark came to find out that Baron von Strucker’s base housed one of the giant Chitauri Leviathans. This was all part of Strucker’s experiments and was where Tony eventually snatched Loki’s scepter and thus created Ultron in the process.
Just a few months ago, Robert Downey Jr. was also to be joining Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming. It also makes sense to have Tony in this film since he’s dealt with Chitauri technology before. Perhaps Stark can lend a hand to Peter on helping him to defeat the threat of the Vulture and the Tinkerer.
Since the Tinkerer will now be Spider-Man: Homecoming, there’s no telling what he was able to steal from the Chitauri. But whatever it was, it can’t be good. The Tinkerer may not have a lot of screen time in the film, but it looks like he will play a very important role in helping to craft Vulture’s flight suit.
It will be interesting to see what the Tinkerer comes up with when he creates this suit for the Vulture. It would be nice to see a B-rated villain actually get a chance to shine. No he’s not one of Spidey’s more popular villains, but he’s certainly given the wallcrawler a tough time over the years. We will get our chance to see the Terrible Tinkerer in action when we see Tom Holland get his first MCU Spider-Man film in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Will the Peter and Tony prevail over the scientific genius of the Tinkerer and the Vulture? I guess we’ll have to find out!
