Will Smith Confirms There Won’t Be A ‘Fresh Prince’ Reboot & Here’s Why That’s A Good Thing

Prepare to set aside those ’90s multi-colored vests, loud Skidz pants, bulging shoulder pads and muddy Air Jordan VIIs for good because a reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air just ain’t happening.

Even though last year was riddled with intriguing rumors that Will Smith’s production company was interested in bringing back , it appears that this ambitious idea has just been shot down by the actor himself.

While out and about promoting Suicide Squad, the OG Fresh Prince was pretty adamant that we give up all hope of that catchy theme-tune ever rocking our television sets again. Speaking to , when asked whether there was ever any chance of a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air revival, he didn’t beat around the bush, saying:

“I don’t think ever, like pretty close to when hell freezes over. Like we’re going to leave that one alone.”

So there you have it. The show that basically entertained and inspired an entire generation is not making a comeback. And while we wipe away the tears trickling out of our inner ’90s kid right about now, let’s remind ourselves that this is all probably quite a good thing.

In , perhaps we need to slightly reconsider our relentless desire to keep ’80s and ’90s nostalgia burning bright. After all, let’s be real, nothing will ever top the originals.

So, in lieu of this, here are four more reasons (amongst many!) why the decision to not bring back The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is the right one:

1. The ’90s should stay in the ’90s

No matter how much we might try, we will never be able to relive the true ’90s. Even though wearing your scruffy high-tops, one-hook-down overalls and a backward cap might seem really “in” right now, don’t kid yourself — you’ll never make it truly work like all the cool kids from the best time period ever.

Ultimately, let’s not forget that the The Fresh Prince is so ’90s it has the word “fresh” in the title, so the whole premise will just look out of place in any other decade.

2. Carlton isn’t intersted

After Will, the next best character is Carlton, hands down. And although actor Alfonso Ribeiro has been pretty keen to bring back his epic dance moves in recent years on various talk shows, he’s actually not that interested in any kind of official reboot. Straight from the horse’s mouth, he revealed the following to last October:

“It’s not exciting to me because I know it ain’t gonna happen. So I’m like, it ain’t gonna happen. And if it happened, it wouldn’t be ‘Fresh Prince.’ It would be something that’s taking the story of the show and having all new people do something. To me, that’s not ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.’ Is Will Smith starring in it? No — that ain’t no ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. He’s the ‘Fresh Prince.’ There is no other ‘Fresh Prince.'”

Then, he smacked the entire idea of a reboot down in one fell swoop, saying:

“Like, people love that show, and I think they should remember that show, and there’s no reason to mess it up, ’cause all you can do is mess it up. You’re not gonna make it better! So don’t mess it up. Let’s let history be history.”

Truer words have never been spoken.

3. There can be no Bel Air without Uncle Phil

Uncle Phil R.I.P.

Fact: No one will ever be able to compare to Will’s no-nonsense Uncle Phil. Nobody laid down the law quite like the Banks patriarch, so when news spread like wildfire of actor James Avery’s passing at the age of 68 in 2014, it shocked and saddened fans all over the world. As social media tributes flooded in and co-stars expressed their condolences, one thing became quite clear — the talented James Avery and his stern Uncle Phil could never be replaced.

When speaking about his disinterest in the reboot, Alfonso Ribeiro even cited his on-screen father as a reason, arguing:

“The reality for me is that, you know, James Avery passed and he was the backbone of that show. Without him, we have no show.”

Agreed. No reboot could ever re-imagine the relationship Will and Uncle Phil once shared, nor can a special moment like this ever be re-created:

4. We’ve already had the perfect ending

Unlike many other shows that leave their audiences hanging after the final credits roll, with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air there’s no reason to continue the story.

In the final scenes of the last episode, Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv sell the Bel-Air family estate, Carlton is en route to Princeton and Will goes off to finish his college degree. When he turns off the light in the family home, it’s a perfectly poignant ending to a perfect finale.

Each member of the Banks household goes on with their own lives and we get the closure we crave. There is absolutely no need to turn that light on again.

Do you agree that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is sacred and should never be re-booted?
