Following up a critically acclaimed role in HBO’s Show Me a Hero, Winona Ryder returns to TV in the upcoming Netflix series Stranger Things. Looking like a hardcore homage to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King with a Blade Runner-esque soundtrack, the first trailer for the show has hit the web and stirred up excitement for anyone who’s been waiting for a vehicle to showcase Winona. Not to mention those E.T. meets Without a Trace vibes!
The series is set in small-town Indiana in the 1980s. Ryder plays Joyce Byers, whose son disappears mysteriously putting her into a panic. She enlists the help of the small-town police, but a group of her son’s friends conduct their own search, encountering strange things including a girl with a shaved head and a mystery of her own. There are distinct alien and supernatural happenings afoot.
“Ninety-nine out of 100 times a kid goes missing, the kid is with a parent or relative” says David Harbour as the police officer speaking to the frantic Byers. “Well, what about the other time? You said 99 out of 100. What about the other time? The one?” she responds. As ragged as she looks, Winona Ryder is the mom I’d want looking for me if I went missing.
As an ’80s/’90s teen queen it seems fitting for Ryder to return to the decade in this new role. This may not be the grown up Lydia Deetz or Veronica she was born to play but we’ll take what we can get! And now that we see just how mysterious the show looks it remains one of our most hotly anticipated new shows, especially among Netflix’s original offerings.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE Ryder talked about taking on the role:
“It’s all about trying something new… This is a genre that I enjoy watching, but haven’t necessarily explored before, which drew me to the project… I think the audience will love the nostalgic voyage back in time before technology had completely took over. Kids were asked to put their toys away at dinner – not their phones. Yet, there were astronauts who were going to space and government conspiracies loomed. It was just such a different world back then.”
Stranger Things premieres July 15 on Netflix.
