Sufficed to say, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received some very mixed reception to say the least. Starting off on a stronger note with Man of Steel, the planned DC Cinematic Universe has been sliding down a decline lately. In the midst of the rubble left from the battle fans of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the San Diego Comic Con Wonder Woman panel has released the first official look at this heroins new feature film. Going back to tell her origin story leading up to the events in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it has always been a worry of mine that it would feel like a step backward for the future of the franchise, doing the exact opposite of what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been doing. All of this being said, does the trailer impress? Have a look for yourself and lets break it down:
Does The Trailer Impress?
Let me first state that I absolutely loved this trailer. It is impressive on many levels, but the film itself still worries me. From start to finish, it looks like a very well-told origin story, and the tonal shift definitely feels needed for this universe after the dour feel of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That being said, it still feels like they are slightly holding back some of Gal Gadot’s speaking scenes, making audiences believe that they should still be unsure about her portrayal in the future of this universe. I personally enjoy her performances, but so far, she has just been used for action purposes.
Style Over Substance?
Directed by Patty Jenkins (of Monster fame), having the woman touch seems to be the perfect fit. Sadly, it does seem to still have the Zack Snyder vibe. While that should work in context with this universe, it feels odd for a period piece like this. Slow motion action sequences in the middle of a bar fight and CGI versions of the character sliding on the ground, looks very out of place. The action sequences also look like landscapes taken from the set of Zack Snider’s 300. While that film is a joy to gasp at, it will grow tired really fast if that style is utilized more often than not throughout this picture. So I do worry that once the base story is set and the first act concludes, it may become just another entertaining blockbuster without the extra pizazz. I really hope I am wrong in that regard. All of the worries aside, this film does look beautiful.
Final Thoughts On The Trailer
The Comic Con trailer for 2017s Wonder Woman did more than just impress me, and I can gladly say that DC has me excited for another one of their upcoming films. This trailer gave me a little more faith for the future of the franchise and actually made me curious about the adaptations of Aquaman and The Flash. Being a big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, am I alone in thinking this has a very Captain America: The First Avenger vibe going on? Let me know in the comments below.
Not to add another complaint, but I am one of the viewers that is worried of the clash between television and film once The Flash is given his own solo film, but after seeing this trailer, they have proven a bit of hope that they will be able to create their own unique and darker spin on the character. I loved every bit of this trailer, but I will still be choosing to proceed with caution.
