This is the era of comic book films. Gone are the days when companies were worried and unsure about a superhero’s film performance at the box office. Now, capes and tights — no matter how well-known or obscure — are the norm. An example of the genre’s growing success is Wonder Woman. The heroine is finally getting her own feature film in her 70+ years of existence, at the directorial hands of Patty Jenkins.
Interestingly, what many people forget is that this isn’t Jenkins’s first foray into the superhero world. In 2011, she was hired to direct Thor: The Dark World. Unfortunately, she left the project with the ever-so-common explanation of “creative differences.” At the time, Jenkins said this about her departure:
“I have had a great time working at Marvel. We parted on very good terms, and I look forward to working with them again.”
Despite this statement, many fans wondered (pun!) whether Patty Jenkins had a hard time dealing with Marvel and rumors of them not parting on the greatest of terms started to surface.
After that supposedly bad experience, many would expect the director to have a not-so-kind opinion of the studio. Well, apparently, that is not the case. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where she talked about her experience directing 2017’s Wonder Woman, Jenkins revealed how she felt about Marvel:
“I’m still so grateful to those guys for hiring a woman to direct f—ng ‘Thor.’ Why would you do that? You don’t have to do that.”
Personally, I must disagree with the “you don’t have to do that” part, referring to hiring a woman to direct a certain type of film, as gender shouldn’t matter when it comes to storytellers. However, it’s nice to know for sure that previous rumors regarding her bad relationship with the company were not true. It’s also really nice to see that Patty is grateful towards Marvel and is willing to put the studio in a positive light.
One thing’s for sure though, while I thoroughly enjoy Thor: The Dark World, we will always be left wondering what Jenkins would have brought to the film and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fortunately, she will hopefully , which hits theaters on June 2, 2017.
What Do You Think About Patty’s Opinion Of Marvel? Are You Excited For Wonder Woman?
I´m an avid movie fan whose favorite movie ever is Back to the Future. I´m the type of person that if I like a TV show, I´ll binge watch it, no matter how long or how hard the ride is. I love super heroes, in fact, I pride myself of being a comic book fan since long, long before the super hero movie craze got going.
