The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the standard that all other superhero movies have been trying to live up to in recent years. So it’s no secret that everyone wants to be a part of the success. Sometimes though, interest comes from some unexpected sources; in this case, a professional wrestler.
WWE superstar Sheamus spoke with fans at Wizard World Comic Con in Philadelphia and revealed that he would jump at the opportunity to join the MCU.
“I want to be a part of the Marvel Universe,” Sheamus said. “I’m a big fan of the Marvel comics and The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, but I would love to be a part of the Marvel Universe.”
Sheamus made his debut on the big screen as Rocksteady in the recently released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. Given that comic-based movie experience, a role in the MCU seems like a logical next step for the 4-time WWE Heavyweight champion. However, the role that he really wants may not be one that a lot of fans could see him playing. Ideally for Sheamus, he would be playing the classic Spider-Man villain, Venom.
“No offense to Topher Grace but he just didn’t look like Eddie Brock,” Sheamus said. “He looked like Eddie Brock had been on a hunger strike for a few weeks.”
While he’s not wrong about the former owner of the role, it still doesn’t seem like one that fans would be happy to see Sheamus fill. Maybe Kraven the Hunter would be a more fitting role if he wants to play a Spider-Man villain. Or maybe with the rumored Blade series coming to Netflix, we could see the Celtic Warrior take the role of Morbius. There are plenty of roles out there to choose from.
Before you jump to write off the possibility of Sheamus filling one those roles, you should remember that Drax the Destroyer was played by former WWE superstar Dave Bautista. And while that role didn’t really require any serious acting chops, fans love the big screen version of the character, perhaps more so than the comic book version.
“Batista and The Rock have really opened the door,” Sheamus said.
With Batista cementing his role in the MCU and The Rock soon to join the DCEU as the villainous Black Adam, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Sheamus and other WWE guys follow suit.
There is no question that Sheamus has the body type to fit into a comic book movie. Now it’s just a matter of finding the right role for him. Who knows? Perhaps some time down the road he will have the opportunity to get the role that he wants and we will see Venom hit Spidey with a Brogue Kick.
