After much heated conversations on my last article —where I listed characters not because they were in essence real doctors, but rather known by the title of “Doctor” in their hero/villain alias, this time I bring you actual doctors in the medical and academic sense within the Marvel Universe. One character might actually surprise you.

Curt Connors, before earning his doctorate in the study of reptiles and amphibians, served as a war surgeon, treating amputations. After he himself suffered the calamities of war and lost an arm, he became obsessed with reptilian regeneration, which led him to become the infamous Lizard. Dr. Curt Connors as the Lizard is one of Spider-Man’s most recurring villains, and he was portrayed by actor Rhys Ifans in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

In the movie X-Men: First Class, before joining the X-Men, McCoy was a leading scientist and inventor in the CIA. He was recently played by Nicholas Hoult in X-Men: Apocalypse.

The CEO of Stark Industries is one of the Marvel Universe’s most recognized heroes, earning Marvel Studios a whopping with the third Iron Man movie installment, Iron Man 3. Robert Downey Jr. plays the iconic Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He attended and graduated from the California State Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Harvard University, among many others. Mister Fantastic’s genius-intellect has taken him all over the Marvel multiverse, aiding cosmic entities like Galactus and Uatu the Watcher. He was recently portrayed by Miles Teller in the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot. He was also played by Ioan Gruffudd in 2005’s Fantastic Four and again in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Professor X is the leader of the X-Men and runs his own academic institution, Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. His studies in genetics has led him to become one of the leading researchers in the area of mutations, especially the X-gene that is present in mutants.

Charles Xavier was portrayed in the original X-Men trilogy , as well as in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and briefly in X-Men: Days of Future Past by Sir Patrick Stewart. He was played by James McAvoy in X-Men: First Class, the majority of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and recently in X-Men: Apocalypse.

His studies in genetics led him to create the “perfect mutant” by combining the DNA of Scott Summers/Cyclops with that of Jean Grey’s clone, Madelyne Pryor, to create Nathan Summers aka Cable. Mister Sinister’s inclusion in future X-Men movie installments was teased in the post-credit scene of X-Men: Apocalypse.
