Among many great events in Game of Thrones , “The Broken Man” — including , the gathering of the Jon’s army and Jaime vs. The Blackfish — one scene quietly stole the show. For me, at least. As a lesbian viewer, seeing Yara Greyjoy casually chilling at a brothel in Volantis was a marvelously authentic, natural example of LGBT content on TV. Check it out:
Yara’s hearty, visceral sexuality (well, she’s an Iron Islander, who are basically a kind of lusty Scottish Viking) was a breakthrough moment in TV, where lesbian characters are often mawkish, tokenistic or depressingly chaste. Sure, we’ve seen fabulous lesbian characters in Buffy‘s Tara, The 100‘s among others, but even stud-about-town Shane of The L Word would never brag as Yara did: ‘I’m gonna go fuck the tits off this one.”
— whether it be joking, aggressive, robust or dynamic, yet in one short scene Yara Greyjoy achieved all of these. It’s 2016 and this is the first lesbian TV character I’ve seen that healthily, ruggedly speaks about women and sex that way that I do, the way that many real women do. Of course, what works for Yara may not work for all lesbians, but it’s a type of sexual performance that has been missing from an otherwise wonderfully diverse and daring TV landscape.
in Game of Thrones, with both Euron and Yara both planning to attempt to persuade Daenerys Targaryen — or ”this dragon queen” as Yara calls her — to help them to take back the Iron Islands. Let’s hope we see more of Yara’s newly broadcast sexuality on her way to Meereen, hopefully culminating in some agreeable flirtation with Dany. Everyone else who ever meets the Mother of Dragons is attracted to her; why should Yara be any different?
If you can think of a more boisterous, hearty lesbian character than Yara, sound off in the comments! Even though it’s gonna be a bit , What’s going to happen to the Greyjoys in the “?
