The land of Game Of Thrones fan theory is overflowing with , some of them , and some of them . And then there are some that are just plain fun to think about, regardless of likelihood. In a show where so many of our favorite characters wind up finding themselves on the business end of a broadsword, isn’t it nice to imagine that some of them might actually still be alive?
The following fan theory is based soley on information from the TV series Game Of Thrones. It (probably) wouldn’t work in the Song Of Ice And Fire books, but .
What do you remember about Syrio Forel? He was Arya’s “dance instructor,” the First Sword of Braavos, hired by Ned Stark to teach his youngest daughter the skills of sword fighting. And he sacrificed his own life to Meryn Trant in order to save Arya at the end of Season 1. Or did he?
He may have been unarmed when he told Arya to run, but who’s to say that such a skilled fighter couldn’t have found a way to outsmart his opponent? He is from Braavos, after all, where all sorts of surprising magical stuff goes down. You know who else is from Braavos? Jaqen H’agar.
Syrio Forel = Jaqen H’agar
We never actually see Meryn Trant defeat Syrio, we just assume that he did since we don’t see Syrio again. We do, however, meet the mysterious Jaqen H’ghar in Season 2, Episode 2, when he his pretending to be a Lorathi criminal who got himself thrown into the dungeons of the Red Keep.
Here are all the reasons why they MIGHT be the same person.
1. They’re Both From Braavos
Okay, so this might not seem like much to go on at first, but think about it. If they were both from Braavos, then that means that one of them could have learned to become a Faceless Man, and one (or both) of them could have died there and had his body prepared in the House of Black and White and his face added to the Hall of Faces to be used at a later time.
2. The God Of Death
Remember Syrio’s most epic line?
The House of Black and White is dedicated to the God of Death. Coincidence!?!?
3. They Both Have A Soft Spot For Arya
Jaqen H’ghar might not seem like the most protective figure during Arya’s training to become no one, but he does give her a second chance after she fucks up by killing Meryn Trant (because he’s flattered that she wanted to avenge his alter ego’s death!?) AND he seems genuinely bummed that she won’t be completing her training AND tells the Waif not to let her suffer. That’s as warm and fuzzy as he could possibly be without betraying his cover as no one.
4. WTF Was Jaqen Doing In That Dungeon?
A man is far too clever to get thrown in the dungeons of the Red Keep and put in a cage by the likes of Yoren of the Night’s Watch, unless that was his plan all along. While it seems a little far-fetched that he could have known where Arya would be, Syrio probably would have been able to guess that she would have been on her way to meet up with her fave brother who also happened to be in the Night’s Watch.
5. Who Is This Guy Standing Behind The Waif!?
In one of the set photos released from Episode 8, “No One,” we see a shadowy figure standing behind the Waif, who is no doubt in hot pursuit of the wounded . You can tell the shadow isn’t the Waif’s since the hair is different and the arm is at a different angle. Could it be…?
Here, let me stick those side by side for you to get a better look:
Game Of Thrones will return on Sunday on HBO with Episode 8, “No One.”
